The smoky eye lie

At the gym this week, as usual we were watching What Not Wear. It was standard fare until they got to Carmindy, the so lovely, sweet and dreamy make up guru.

The makeover-ee asked Carmindy to show her how to do a smoky eye. Carmindy arched a perfect eyebrow and responded, "Oh, that's what you want to learn?"

Jesse Kamm: Spring 2008 collection

Earlier this year, I was left kind of shocked and dumbfounded when I found out that major fashion designers like Miuccia Prada, Marc Jacobs, Karl Lagerfeld, and Alber Elbaz hardly ever -- if at all -- used the internet.

Reading in the tub... in the bookcase

We only have one bathroom in our house. Luckily, I work from home and seldom shower so our time conflicts are held to a minimum. Of course, even if I wanted to spend a moment in the bathroom I wouldn't be able to enjoy it. My two small boys see to that. The idea of having quality time in there is just a dream in our house, something that only happens in songs and movies. What songs? How about Rubber Ducky? See, I know what I'm talking about.

That is why I was so excited when I saw this Biblio tub from Antonio Lupi which features a beautiful rectangular tub with clean lines and lots of space (length, I'm 6'3) built into a bookcase frame. How sweet is that?

It's amazing what you can get for $17,000 these days. A library for the bathtub. It's too rich for my pocket, but not for my dreams.

Ask a gay man...the video

We already told you everything you need to know about scarves, but if you're more interested in practical fashion advice like how to find a pair of jeans to fit your bod, you should check out this video by William Sledd. Sledd is a budding fashionisto with a somewhat dirty mouth and a highly refined sense of what looks good.

Let me know what you think, okay?

Dove's evolution of beauty campaign

Many of you are familiar with the Dove advertising campaign promoting "Real Beauty" in television commercials and print advertisements. But now Dove has joined a number of other companies in the video "viral" marketing medium by producing a short film for YouTube. The film is called "Evolution Beauty" and I think it's well worth watching. It certainly puts the modeling industry in perspective.

Karl Lagerfeld in his own words

Earlier today, I found a 1973 interview with old Karl Lagerfeld on YouTube. In the video, Lagerfeld talks about how he got his start as a designer in Paris back in 1952. The interview is unfortunately in German, but there are subtitles for those of us who do not sprechen sie deutsche (obviously, I don't). Hard to believe the whole Lagerfeld empire (the diet, the hair, the leather gloves) began with a single wool coat.

I can't fold...and here's the proof

As I mentioned earlier today, Styledash has a new group over at YouTube where everyone can upload videos of their own clothes. And just to prove that we want to see them "au naturel", here's my closet, in all of its messy glory.

So, what's in your closet?

Hey, folks, just wanted to tell you about a new Styledash group over at YouTube. It's called "What's in my Closet?", and we're asking everyone to make and submit videos about that special little place that your clothes call home. And if you've got a really great closet -- or for that matter, a really bad closet, you might just find your way onto this site.

Style according to Burger King?

We all have our own ideas about what makes someone a style icon. For me, it's some combination of a free spirited sense of what is flattering -- like Cate Blanchett. For other people, the criteria might be something as simple as always looking great -- like Nicole Kidman. A new video on YouTube, produced by P. Diddy and Burger King seems to have an all together different idea about the definition of style. In a generous assessment, the video suggests that style is really about "having it your way."

Watch it for yourself:

Don't get me wrong, P. Diddy is one stylish man, and I can't deny that they have a point about the relationship between "having it your way" and being a stylish person, but that doesn't answer my underlying question about this video.

What does Burger King have to do with style?

Classic Kate Moss in a helmet

With more than 14 concurrent ad campaigns, Kate Moss seems to be everywhere. But love or hate her, she's a truly captivating figure: that mooney face, those wide eyes, her long, elegant neck, those unfortunate teeth. I just came across this YouTube video containing footage from a documentary about Kate Moss, which seems to be more than a decade old. In the film, she's goofing off and preparing to have her photo taken. What's funny about the YouTube clip is that Kate is wearing this big ridiculous Roman-looking helmet, which doesn't even seem to fit her. Any modest types out there might not want to watch the movie -- it's no worse than the cover of W last month, but don't say I didn't try to warn you.

Sort of makes you wonder what the photoshoot is trying to sell? Battle helmets?

Style in the year 2020: flashy lights?

philips design probe program skinMovies from 'Blade Runner' to 'Minority Report' have tried to predict the future of styles. And who knows, maybe mini-skirts will be back in fashion when the 23rd century rolls around... But Philips, the company currently showing off these amazing LED-based fabrics, predicts flashy, emoting fabrics will be all the rage in 2020. Witness their Design Probe program: SKIN. From what I can tell, it's a futuristic version of the mood ring, designed to be worn all over and respond to your emotional state. What's next? Maybe you'll be able to show what websites your thinking about on your t-shirts. Or maybe that is a very bad idea...

Models + dancing = funny

When I saw this video on YouTube, I practically fell out of my chair. Few things in the world are as funny or as charming as watching that little Gemma Ward and her model buds sporting Afros and lip syncing to Beyonce.

It's so delightfully middle school slumber party, isn't it? I half expected a poster of Patrick Swayze to suddenly appear on the wall. But good for them -- after all, when you make $2000 a day just to look pretty, you really shouldn't take yourself that seriously.
