Tip of the day: They call me mellow yellow (and grey)

We have seen the yellow and gray combo around for some time now. The sunny hue is completely complimentary of the soft neutral and a perfect pick for those with a cool skin tone. Plus, it's a lot less harsh than its bumblebee side kick, black and yellow.

Try giving some of these mellow yellow looks a whirl.

Nail Polish Summer School: Sick of stained nails?

The last time we removed the polish from our toenails and didn't have time to repaint them, we were horribly embarrassed. Not because we're so particular about having our toenails painted -- simply because we kept them painted so often that, when we took the polish off, our toenails were discolored! Eeewww!!!

Make your own Hermes bag... or how about a DIY bikini?

Well, it beats spending time on a decades-long waiting list for an iconic Kelly, doesn't it?

New York blogger Karyn Bosnak drew our attention to a new feature on the Hermes website which shows you how to make your own Hermes bag, just like the real thing. The only downside? You have to make it out of paper... a fun craft project, perhaps, but not likely to withstand the first rainy day of summer.

If you'd like to make something a little more substantial (but only a little more substantial), why not try your hand at making a bikini?

From Red Carpet to Your Closet: Leighton Meester at the Metropolitan Opera Premiere

Leighton Meester might be in a struggle for Queen B status on Gossip Girl, but she was in her element on the red carpet at the MET premiere. We were thrilled to see her go with a bright color, and while some folks find this color slightly reminiscent of Big Bird, we've been in love with it ever since Michelle Williams wore it at the 2006 Oscars.

Several elements of this outfit work together to create this simultaneously classic and trendy look. Click through the gallery to see how you can grab this Gossip Girl's red carpet style.

Why aren't you wearing this? Yellow pashmina wrap

We often find, when attending a fabulous evening soiree in the Hamptons (or hitting up a pal's barbeque), we find ourselves a bit chilly by the end of the night. While a strappy little dress was just perfect when we left the house, once the sun has been down a few hours and we have a perfectly chilled cosmo in hand, we end up with goosebumps -- so not sexy.

Why aren't you wearing this? Yellow Tawny Wood Heels

Yellow, as popular as it is this year, isn't always all that easy to pull off. While some folks look bright and summery, others look jaundiced wearing it. Such is life.

Fortunately, you don't have to deck yourself out in a bright yellow dress to jump on board with the trend -- accessories will give you a hint of that trendy color without anybody even thinking of Big Bird when you walk in the room.

The sun is getting brighter and the days are getting longer, and for most of us that means more days out having fun in the sun. We certainly hope that sunscreen is simply an automatic for you at this point, but wouldn't you like another, more dramatic looking way to protect your face from the sun's rays?

Paris Hilton shines in the season's hottest color

I'm not always the biggest fan of Paris Hilton's wardrobe choices, but I have to say that she's really rocking this dress in spring's trendiest hue, yellow. She looks bright, sunny, and ... classy! Here's why this look works so well:

  • The dress is really fun and feminine -- the halter is a flattering neckline and seriously springy. Pair that with the defined waist and full skirt, and you've got a perfect spring dress.

  • The color is, of course, one of the hottest choices this season. Paris' dress has a fun white print on it to make it stand out without making it too loud. Yellow, if paired with colors can be a bit much for some people, but paired with white (or navy) will work for just about anybody.

Inspired by the original (official!) weekly wardrobe_remix recap that the group's founder Tricia Royal does on her own blog, bits and bobbins, here are a few of my personal favorite recent additions to the group.

I love this look by Yes Becky. Taken against the scenic backdrop of London's rainy Hyde Park, she looks so well put together and ready for spring. I love the combination of the yellow and turquoise with the black. She's matched everything just so perfectly...if you look closely, even her manicure matches the outfit! All of the individual pieces of this outfit look great as well, and almost everything is from class British labels such as Topshop, Primark, and Miss Selfridge.

Shoes of the Day: Dasan Rainy Day Foldover Boots

van dasan rain bootsThe weather here in LA, like most of the people who live here, is having a bit of a dual personality moment. It was beautifully sunny and teased us unto Spring yesterday and today, it is cold, gray, and on may way back home, starting to drizzle. It's the kind of day that begs for a pair of rain boots, bright yellow to keep us hopeful.

I never thought I'd ever say I could ever wear a pair of shoes by Vans, but the Dasan Rainy Day Foldover Boots might be an exception. They're not the annoyingly trendy rain boots printed with this, that, and the other that you see everywhere. These are just plain...rain boots, made for rain.

Available from Karmaloop for $65.

Yesterday Kyle pointed out how yellow is popping up all over the place these days. I couldn't help but think the same thing as I browsed through some of the most recent additions to the wardrobe_remix community. Yellow was appearing absolutely everywhere... in tights and accessories, in shoes and boots, and as big pops of color in dresses and jackets. I love how these bright, sunny splashes of color remind me that warm spring days really are just around the corner.

Yellow is the "it" color of spring 2008

Although yellow is typically a summer color, it's popping up all over the place this spring! Seeing as how yellow makes people happy, I'm ok with that. And did you know that when people are in a yellow room they even tend to eat and drink more? Nicole Richie, take note.

The color of the canary can be found in dresses, shoes, accessories and even makeup for the Spring 2008 season. Although in general, yellow supposedly looks better on cool skin tones, as long as you keep it in small doses anyone should be able to wear it -- as Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz have proved to us. The unexplainable duo wore matching yellow eye liner to a club recently. To try this look, get M.A.C.'s Golden Lemon pigment, or check out Sephora where they have another great shadow by Bare Escentuals, called Yellow Amber.

Clothing companies are rolling out the yellow products too. The GAP has an amazing pair of yellow Converse sneakers for only $40.00, while Steve Madden provides us with the perfect pair of yellow pumps to dress up any outfit for $99.95. Also making it into my favorites is a classic Marc by Marc Jacobs bag in yellow. Browse through the gallery to see pictures of all things yellow, including how men should add the color to their wardrobe (in a tie) and how I wish I could add it to my wardrobe (in an adorable, flower print, Marc Jacobs dress).

And in case you were wondering -- here is how NOT to do yellow. Poor KT Tunstall. Oh how I love her voice, and oh how I hate that dress! Let the bumble bee jokes begin...

Dress of the Day: Tory Burch Bay Dress

tory burch bay dress
If you're still afraid to wear yellow, this dress is most definitely not for you.

Tory Burch's Bay Dress is a bright canary yellow, which probably accounts for the dress's color name, "Yellow Bird." You can't be shy about standing out because the dress is not only the brightest yellow I've seen short of being neon, but the fabric itself, made of a blend of silk and polyester, is shiny with a shimmering silver wave pattern. The shoulders feature silver and gold beaded buckle-looking applique that make the dress look a bit like a jumper.

If you're feeling Big Bird, the dress is available from Revolve Clothing for $425.

Dress of the Day: DvF Eyelet Shift Dress

diane von fursternberg eyelet shift dressIt's March 1, y'all, and while we're a few weeks away from the official first day of Spring, let's call it close enough to go full force with new Spring clothes!

Last October during Fashion Week, we saw that Diane von Fursternberg was showing lots of interesting shapes in dresses for Spring, and yes, they're here. The Eyelet Shift Dress is pale, almost yellowish, green with white eyelet overlay. The wide shoulder straps create a square neckline. The straight skirt has an inverted pleat in the front, giving you even more room than what a typical shift dress would.

Available from Neiman Marcus for $385.

Spring will be yellow fever

sunflower chain dressIf Deidre's "Hot or not?" question about yellow eyeshadow wasn't enough of a hint, then here's something a little more blatant. Yellow is the hot color for spring, whether it's in makeup palettes or apparel, you best get ready for a little bit of yellow fever.

I can tell you right now that the yellow color trend makes me cringe a little because yellow is just about the worst color for me to wear. However, there will be ways to incorporate yellow into a wardrobe without having to look like a walking banana. Yellow, like white, comes in many shades - everything from what may look like an off-white, to bright, screaming neon yellow school bus. For clothes, I am probably going to go with pieces that keep yellow away from my face, like pants and skirts. Of course, I love little dresses for spring, and while the Chain Dress (pictured) is a little too sunny for me, I know that there will be plenty of dresses with prints that only modestly highlight yellow. Of course, I have absolutely nothing against a great pair of yellow wedge heeled sandals!
