Festa T-shirts: What kind of girl are you?

Whit Honea is a slacker, a borderline degenerate, and a daydream believer. He's also our resident expert on casual chic. If it's comfortable, and not heinous, he's all over it. He's quite charming, really.

Whatever kind of girl you are (or those you know if it's a gift) Festa T-Shirts has you covered. The company, founded by Christopher Festa in 2003, specializes in producing t-shirts for women that showcase geographic and lifestyle themes. This doesn't mean that Festa doesn't create shirts for non-women, namely men and kids- it just means they've found a nice niche and they are running with it. Hey, why not?

Ladies, flaunt your forties

Forty is apparently a big deal for women. Men, widely accepted to become distinguished with age, don't really notice 40 or the subsequent years known has the "40 somethings." They only notice things like how suddenly there aren't any professional athletes their age or that movies they love start issuing 25th Anniversary specials. These are the signs of aging for men. However, such things are more likely to raise a forty than cause much grief.

What do high heels and 600 pound gorillas have in common?

There's no doubt that we love the way our legs look in extremely high heels -- put us in a 4" or 5" heel, and we'll show you legs that seem to go on forever, like our pal Gwyneth Paltrow over to the right. However, the New York Times recently had an article about the high, high heel and how women walk in them.

And, of course, the answer is the same as how one would move a 600 pound gorilla -- very carefully.

Kate Quinn Organics wants to wrap your baby in luxury

Seattle based Kate Quinn Organics, previously known as Earth Organic Baby Basics, is a parent's dream. That is assuming said parent wants "the softest, most natural materials" for their baby's comfort, and "the highest quality design and construction, and most importantly, the hope of a cleaner, kinder earth." If the parent wants all that, and you know that they do, then they can't go wrong with Kate Quinn.

The designs are created using "simple, elegant lines" and are available in nature-inspired hues to highlight the natural beauty of a child.

Ask StyleDash: Clothes for grandmas and more

Dear StyleDash,

I'm 77 years young and having trouble finding fashionable clothes. I dress casually and cannot wear the tees and blouses because I have the roll around the middle. I can wear a size 10 in pants as long as the waist is elastic, but tops show my roll so I tend to buy XL, which don't really fit. Where can I find nice-looking clothes that aren't old and dowdy? I hate shopping because I cannot find anything that makes me feel good.

Have slips been replaced by Spanx?

Gallery: Slips (in case you weren't sure they still existed)

Calvin Klein full slip, $48Low-back Satin Slip, $24.50Spanx 'Hide and Sleek' half slip, $52Satin Ballet Length Slip, $26.50Lace Trim Satin Slip, $24.50

How many of you own a slip? We're not talking about a slip dress -- we mean a real, actual slip that is worn under a dress, and, theoretically, not seen at all. Now, if you own one, do you wear it?

This question was asked over at Friday Style, and the answers were interesting. Not surprisingly, there seems to be a generation gap -- apparently some grandmothers were simply aghast that their little ones weren't wearing slips with their dresses this Easter, while the younger set was amazed that anyone still wore slips.

Do you still wear a slip under your dress?

Women over 65 think Talbots is too dowdy

Gallery: Why would anyone think Talbots is "dowdy"?

TalbotsTalbotsTalbotsTalbotsTalbots

Who do you picture wearing clothes from Talbots? Here at Styledash, we had many opinions -- some of our moms wear at it, some of us secretly love individual items from the store, but most of us thought of it as being for a "grandma-ish" demographic. Apparently, that sentiment is shared by "all the chain's customers." As a matter of fact, even customers who were 65 or older felt that Talbots' styles were made for older women, saying the clothes were "too traditional" and "dowdy."

Would you shop at Talbots after some updates?

Be a stylish Irish (or wannabe) on March 17

It isn't always easy being green (as evidenced by the model to the right), but St. Patrick's Day is right around the corner, so you'd better check your closet now and see what you have to wear. Go ahead. I'll wait.

Nothing, you say? Nothing green at all! Oh, dear!

Well, don't sweat it. Even if green isn't your color, you have to wear something in that hue on March 17, and I've got looks for ladies and fellas and even a few little tykes. As long as you've followed our rules, these items should work well for you. The main thing that I must stress is this: If you wouldn't wear it on any other day, don't wear it for the holiday. If you hate green and never wear it, don't go out in a green dress. Instead, find some accessories, like jewelry or a scarf in your hair, that will ward off the pinchies without sacrificing your personal style.

But please, unless you actually are Irish (and, even if you are), avoid the "Kiss Me, I'm Irish" tees unless you find something incredibly clever. It's just so cliche.

Five ways to anger the fashion police

While I'm sure you look just fabulous every time you set foot outside the house, the majority of people don't. At least, not all the time. Sometimes it's because they didn't change out of their sweats they wore for yardwork earlier in the day, in which case I have ZERO sympathy.

However, even I have been guilty of thinking I put together an outfit that was, you know, fine (and not fine like Beyonce -- fine like, "I suppose it'll do"), only to realize later that a crime of fashion has been committed when I wasn't looking. Maybe my skirt looked fine when I was standing straight in front of the mirror in the morning, but apparently the humidity or sitting in it or something caused it to ride up in unflattering ways by the afternoon.

This post at Blogher points out five common style mistakes and how you can stop making them. Click through the gallery to see if you've been guilty of these fashion faux pas. If you have, don't worry -- I'll tell you how to avoid them in the future!

Smart is the new black

Thank you, thank you, thank you, fashiontribes.com, for giving me my favorite line of the week the month all of 2008 -- smart is the new black. I've long held the opinion that smart girls are sexy, but at times my orations on why Jane Austen heroines (like Elizabeth Bennett) are sexy because they're smart and witty and able to hold their own have been cut short by ditzy girls who forgot to wear a bra.

While we smart girls would ideally like to show off our big, sexy brains in a debate, there is a more subtle approach -- funky eyeglasses. If your SAT scores were low, they won't help you get into the right school, but if you can get a foot in the door, they'll certainly help you look the part.

Just be sure you don't opt for some boring wire frames -- think of glasses as just another accessory, and then make a statement with them. Check out the gallery for some of the hottest new styles from Lenscrafters.

Gisele takes on the pope

Gisele Bundchen is generally consider the supermodel with the best personality. Personality, unfortunately, can be interpreted widely. It could mean that she's the model with the best boobs -- which she is. Or it could mean that she's the model with the best hair -- which again, she is.

A third possibility is that "personality" refers to Gisele's mind, but I doubt it.

How do I know? Well, Gisele likes to talk. Some supermodels -- Kate Moss being the best example -- shy away from interviews and microphones, so we're thankfully spared their oh-so trenchant thoughts. Gisele, on the other hand, loves to chit chat. She loves it so much that she's ever so often apt to say something congenitally stupid.

A case in point is Gisele's recent comments regarding Pope Benedict's latest visit to her native Brazil. During his visit, Benedict came down harshly on the use of contraceptives in the predominately Catholic nation. The pope's message dismayed Gisele -- and rightfully so I'd say -- so she took it upon her narrow shoulders to set the holy pontiff straight:

"It's ridiculous to ban contraceptives. You only have to think of the diseases that are transmitted without them. I think it should be compulsory to use a contraceptive."

Sure, it's admirable that she sticks up for what she believes in, but I really think she ought to look up the word "compulsory" before she tries to use it again. Condom police sound like a bad idea.

Nicole Richie is bad to the bone

When I was in high school, the litmus test for determining who was "healthy thing" and "unhealthy thin" was menstruation. And so long as a woman still had regular periods, there was no reason to worry for parents or coaches to worry about her health.

A new study by Anne Loucks and Aiden Shearer of Ohio University challenges the legitimacy of that health assume. The research project looked at the role of nutrient intake and bone formation in women ages 18 to 32. What they found was that restrictive diets can still impair bone formation, even in instances where a women still has regular periods.

The researchers discovered that women with restrictive diets and strenuous exercise habits are at a significantly increased risk of low bone formation. The lower levels of bone formation in young women can lead to significant health problems down the road, like osteoporosis and broken bones.

With the recent string of model deaths over the past two years, it comes as no surprise that under-eating and overexercising does a number on your body. What struck me about this finding was that the description of the at-risk behaviors matched up perfectly with the diet and exercise habits of many women I know, none of which I would characterize as anorexic.

Sad as it is, I don't expect any of gym rats I know will make their peace with eating carbs anytime soon. The irony is that there is so much pressure on women to be thin that truly dangerous long-term consequences like osteoporosis wouldn't matter in the least. Being slim now is worth more than a preventing a broken hip bone then.

Sure it's dumb, but what would expect from Nicole Richie?

Wolf-whistling banned in Wales?

Men are often surprised to know how frequently women are catcalled or wolf-whistled in an average day. Not just girls in short skirts and low cut tops, but perfectly professional women who mind their own business, but happen to make the mistake of passing by a construction site or crossing by a truck full of dudes on lunch break only to be greeted by an unwelcome, "Hey baby, nice _____." You can fill in the blank.

To address this problem, a building firm in South Wales has banned its employees from wolf-whistling at women. A spokesman for the company said that the ban was suggested by a foreman at a site who "spoke to builders and they all thought that it was a good idea."

No word so far on how this policy has played out, but I'm honestly split between wishing something like this existed here in the states and thinking that this is a completely paternalistic move.

What do you think? Should this behavior be banned by companies? Is such a ban really any different than the sexual harassment policy in your average workplace?

Please comment! I'm dying to know...
