Get rolling with tiny scents that travel well

We love perfume, and we love travel sizes almost as much, so travel size perfumes are twice as exciting.

We've written before about how an atomizer can be a lifesaver if you only have a big bottle of scent and still want to smell sweet on vacation.

Even better are mini-sized roller ball bottles. Small enough to tuck inside your carry-on, discrete and non-aerosol, you can dab on a bit more any time you want to freshen up, even in close quarters.

Sephora has been building up their selection of perfumes in this type of applicator, and you now can get several of your favorites. Plus, the smaller size is usually inexpensive enough that you can try out something new without breaking the bank or worrying about wasting money on something that smells...unfortunate on you.

Globe Trotter in Junya Watanabe s/s 09

2008 has been a breakout year in the US for Globe Trotter. The 111 year old, British producer of hand made luggage only hit stateside in fall '06. This year, we've seen limited edition bags for Conran Shop and J. Crew.

This season, in Paris, Junya Wantanabe featured vintage Globe Trotter luggage in 12 of 48 looks from his s/s '09 runway show. Tim Blanks has a show review at Men.Style that explains the tie in to travel.

Father's Day Gift Guide: Golf gear

If you have a golf-loving Dad, then you know that something golf-related is guaranteed to get a smile from him. Golf guys eat, sleep, and drink the game. It's an obsession!

One sure way to make his day is to set up a tee time so he can spend some time swinging away on the links. Some new golf gear is always welcome, too!

Golf balls are a perennial hit, because he constantly needs them. If you want to get a little more creative, our gallery of golf gifts will give you ideas for something new to help him celebrate his special day.

Hot jewelry for travelophiles

Picture me peeping out of a bright white button-down. Fierce! It's during these stretches of cold, gray day, after cold, gray day, after rainy, cold, gray day, that we all long to be somewhere under the equator. As we dig through the semi-broken $5 umbrellas that have amassed in our closets, we dream of lying on a beach, or exploring the rainforest, or traveling through the desert under the hot sun, and of course looking fabulous in a chic blend of luxury and local accoutrements.

For a taste of warmer climates, I recommend Pangea Collection. Pangea Collection was created by Patricia Pinkney to bring you exquisite and unusual jewelry and accessories from exotic countries all over the world, as well as Canada. Wait, Canada? Yeah, all right, I'll leave that alone.

A lot of these pieces, for example the African Lily Necklace ($62.70) at right are made with bold, bright colors, perfect for that Retro Princess: White and Bright look over which I've been drooling.

Patricia says: "Many of the collections are from Fair Trade organisations. Shipping to the USA and Canada is Free."

Good enough for me. Check out the great Travel Stories section, too. We all need to dream.

How to Pack for a Spring Fling Getaway

Packing for a Spring Fling Getaway
There is just something about the anticipation of the spring/summer season that makes me want to jump into a convertible and escape reality. Now is the perfect time to plan a spring getaway. Not a vacation, a getaway. To me a getaway is a short trip that is barely planned and your packing should consist of one small bag.

One small bag! Yes, that's right -- one small bag. Here are the essentials for a spring fling getaway.

Sexy lingerie: They don't call it spring fever for nothing! Shave those legs because it's time to get down. When you are off traveling with that super hottie you took on as a travel companion you can't wear your ratty winter panties. Those will never do. Put a little spring in his, uh, "step" with something a bit saucier.

Throw and go dress: A dress than you can throw on or off in less then a minute is a must for a spring fling getaway. I prefer a jersey dress, as they are nearly impossible to wrinkle.

Gold gladiator sandals: Typically I would never encourage packing flats but when it comes to a spring getaway they are absolutely necessary. Gold gladiators are in style, comfortable, and can transition form day to night in a snap.

All-in-one make up set: Packing your whole makeup bag just screams high maintenance, which is a fine message for a vacation but not for a getaway. Pick up one of those handy compacts that has all of your needs in one place, it will make getting ready much easier.

And all that other stuff: You must not forget your staples when packing for this fling like: wide leg light wash jeans, great fitting tank top, floppy sun hat, sunscreen (always), a light jacket, a pair of wedge heels, and versatile handbag that can go from day to night.

Look good while you travel

Today I was browsing through Sephora, as I do on a pretty much daily basis. I can't help it, I'm addicted, it's a sickness! Anyways, I clinked on a link that said, "Airplane Approved Beauty." It brought me to the most delightful page -- an entire section of beauty products in mini!

Before I go any farther, I should confess, I love all things mini. There's just something about a teeny tiny lip gloss that makes it much more fun than it's full sized counterpart. I carry around the mini bottles of Purell hand sanitizer, not because the regular bottle doesn't fit in my handbag (which is the size of a small suitcase) but because the mini version is simply more adorable!

So when I found Sephora's section of products that are great for traveling because they're little and tiny, I almost fell off my chair I was so excited! Browse through the gallery to see amazing portable color cards of eye shadow, to-go foundations, miniature lip glosses and more! Forget the fact that I travel like once a year, I need all of these products for their sheer cuteness alone. Except for the Color Cards by Cargo, which look sort of like condoms. I could probably live without those.

Haute Holiday Gift Guide: For the Glamorous Globetrotter

Gifts for the Traveling Fashionista

The holidays are full of busy travelers, but did you know that there are two different kinds of travelers? There is the casual traveler and there is the Glamorous Globetrotter. The casual traveler has only one goal in mind, getting from point A to point B. The Glamorous Globetrotter sees travel as a part of life and needs to have the best travel accessories.

Ted Gibson Hair Sheets: These sheets can remove frizz, prevent over-drying, eliminate odors, and protect your hair from the sun anytime, anywhere.

Gucci Web Travel Bag: For the obnoxious globetrotter ... Shout "Gucci" from the rooftops with this signature travel bag. Fit all of your necessities in this bag, just be warned you will get jealous stares.

Portolano Cashmere Travel Set:
Those itchy blankets and foam pillows on the plane will never do. This cashmere kit will keep you warm and cozy. Plus the eye mask will help you block out that annoying guy in the seat next to you.

Travel Gal Pal Deodorant Remover: These little pink rounds remove unsightly deodorant stains from your clothing. Perfect last minute touch ups on the road.

Herban Essentials Fear of Flying Kit:

Take Charge Travel Bag:
With so many gadgets to keep our lives in order, a bag to keep them in order is a must. This bag will keep you from forgetting your charging essentials and will keep them tangle free.

Plane to See Security Bag: Traveling isn't as simple as it used to be, airport security can be a real drag. This bag will help you get through security faster. Fill it will travel goodies like a mini-toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, and face cleanser for an extra special stocking stuffer.

The Laundress Stain Removal Kit:
For those first class champagne spills during turbulent moments.

Snakeskin Passport Cover: A world traveler needs to keep her passport safe from harm. What better than a luxurious snakeskin passport cover to travel in style?

Is this outfit too sexy for air travel?

Too provocative for Southwest AirlinesWord to the wise: dress like a grandma if you want to fly Southwest Airlines.

At least that seems to be the new company policy, after a customer service supervisor nearly removed Kyla Ebbert from a flight because he thought the college student's clothing was "offensive."

Granted, this isn't the best-looking outfit I've ever seen, but it's not that bad -- and it's certainly not that revealing. However, when the Ebbert asked the surly Southwest rep what was so wrong with ensemble, the snarky fashion fascist simply replied, "The whole thing."

Clearly, the clothing isn't the problem, so my theory is that the overzealous Southwest rep has deemed himself Fashion Police of the Skies, or simply thinks attractive blond women are some kind of threat to national security.

RetroStyle: Airstream at DWR

airstream at DWR
For those of us retro-y style fans out there planning a late-summer road trip (and who also happen to live in the LA area), we might want to mark our calendars for Saturday August 25 for a quick visit to Design Within Reach (DWR) in Manhattan Beach.

DWR has partnered with architect and designer Chris Deam to introduce the Design Within Reach Airstream travel trailer. Deam gutted a vintage Airstream trailer, keeping the aluminum shell, but bringing a lighter, more spacious feeling to the interior. The special edition trailer will be showcased at the Manhattan Beach store. Details about the event are on the DWR website.

Convenient or over-priced samples?

Two things amaze me about travel these days. One being the strict regulations, I know they are necessary to a degree but taking off your shoes and forfeiting liquids over 3oz can get pretty old. Two, the fact that anyone who can will profit off of our inconvenience by repackaging products so they can market them as air friendly.

Sephora had a "fun" little section on their site today called Airplane Approved Beauty, which is fine until you see the items that grace these pages. They are samples! Samples that cost mega bucks mind you. See this .5oz tube of Smashbox Photo Finish Primer, how much would you say that costs? Free, no guess again... its $15.50.

The product that really grates me are these CARGO ColorCards, which are merely samples of eyeshadow. Granted each case holds 28 cards, but still that is 28 single use shadows held together on a piece of foil. How much does that cost? It costs $24 and out of those colors you might end up liking one or two only to never be able to use them again unless you buy a single container which is only $16.

Memorial Day Travel Companion

Plane to See Security Bag
With every holiday comes some form of travel, even if it is you traveling from the couch to the fridge to get another beer. For those who are traveling by plane you know the drama that will come. Get to the airport on time, hope your prized possessions don't get rifled through by security, taking off your shoes so your pedicured feet can touch that icky floor, and the worst moment of all... passing your carry through security.

I alway break into a sick little sweat when I see women ahead of me getting their expensive creams confiscated and think "please don't take my YSL foundation...please." Sometimes people get in trouble and get their 3.5 oz regulation size cosmetics tossed into the "free bin" for airport employees because their goodies aren't tucked away in a clear bag. Instead of finding yourself without a ziploc just fork over $10 for this Plane to See Airport Security bag. Hey, if $10 can help you remember to pack properly its so worth it, better than losing hundreds in cosmetics.

Reminder for holiday air travel - what you can(not) carry on

holiday air travelWhen the Transportation Security Administration made some drastic changes to what travellers could carry on-board (nothing liquid) with them earlier this summer, we posted a list of non-liquid cosmetics as alternatives that you could take with you.

The TSA has since relaxed some of the policies, and as we make plans to travel to and fro to see friends and family, we'd like to point you to their website where they keep an updated list of allowable/non-allowable things in travellers' carry-on bags. As of now, liquids and gels are allowed, but only in containers that hold 3 oz. or less, and all liquids and gels must be sealed in zip-top plastic bags that can be removed from your bags at the security check point. They even have a table dedicated solely to makeup and personal products, so make sure to check it out before you fly.
