What should you wear on your walk to the beach? Certainly not just your swimsuit and nothing else! *shock, gasp, horror* You need something more elaborate than that, something to cover up your nearly naked body until you arrive on the sand where it is acceptable. A "cover up" perhaps? Bingo!

Most of us love the summertime – the sun, the beach, the warmth, the runny makeup... okay, so maybe we don't love all of it. When the weather is hot and you're sweating your face off literally, it is time to readjust your makeup routine so you don't look like a hot mess for the next three months.

While pale, porcelain skin is beautiful, it's hard to ignore the beauty of a bronze glow in the summertime. Who doesn't feel a little bit lovelier with slightly golden, sun-kissed skin? Notice we said slightly -- there's a big difference between being a little bit tan and looking like you've spent every day for the last three weeks baking on Miami Beach.

Your gorgeous, glittering glow? That faded two weeks ago. The deep dark "slimming" tan? It's now a mess of freckles, sun spots, and dry patches all over your shoulders.

Summer came and went, along with it, that beautiful, sun-kissed skin. In its place is The Aftermath, but not to fear! And remember, not only are there ways to salvage your summer skin, but the safe, sunless tanning you used all summer (you didn't actually tan in the sun, did you?!?!) can still be had. I am not here to comment on Lizzie Grubman's tan. No no, I am here to talk about safe sunless tanning. But first, really quickly, how old do you think Lizzie is 36, 46, or dead? Okay that's enough back on topic.

Summer is more than halfway over and if you are still looking a little pasty you are probably ready to go to extreme measures to get that gorgeous summer glow. Don't do it. You will end up looking like a piece of chewed up leather like Lizzie over here. Tanning didn't make her look younger and thinner (thinner yes, she looks like a skeleton), she actually looks like she could score the senior citizen discount at IHop.

If you want a fast tan cooking yourself out in the sun is not the answer. Over exposing yourself to the sun can result in wrinkles and even more horrific, skin cancer. Tanning beds are no better; I mean laying in a 5600 watt tanning bed can't be safe. Try safer and cleaner alternatives like self tanners or, what I prefer, is gradual daily moisturizing lotion. Hawaiian Tropic has a nice line called Island Glow. Island Glow gives you a fast tan (noticeable in about 3 days) and it even firms the skin.

I have personally tried Hawaiian Tropic Island Glow firming moisturizing lotion and overall I am happy with the tan. But I will warn you when mixed with other scents like your perfume the smell aren't so fabulous. Also make sure you follow the instructions by washing your hands afterwards and letting the lotion dry before putting on your clothes. Those minor setbacks aside, these lotions will give you an inexpensive tan and you won't look like Lizzie. Ouch.

Given that it's a gloriously warm and sunny weekend day at the peak of summer, it's the perfect time to talk about tans, tanning, and just "being tan."

A deep, dark, St. Tropez tan is style that will stick. Entertainment and media have tried to shift the idea by glamorizing fair-skinned beauties like Nicole Kidman, Rose McGowan, and Liv Tyler. Even with every outlet -- whether it's media, internet sources, your friends, family, and even your doctor -- hurling warnings of early aging, risk factors, health and medical statistics, and case studies of people who have died of one of various forms of skin cancer, "tan is beautiful" will never go away.
