Coffin Couches: Green and creepy

Have you ever seen a piece of furniture that you were just dying to have? Be careful what you ask for. Coffin Couches make sofas from actual recycled caskets. We're not sure how to tie that together, but it felt right.

Coffin Couches is the ultimate in green furniture design. The couches are made from coffins that they acquired from funeral homes. Apparently, due to health and safety issues, it is illegal for the general public to purchase used coffins, so the company was able to approach the funeral directors with the mindset of recycling.

That's why we're pleased to bring you the 'Trash Talk' shoe from Nike. Yes, Nike. Big companies can have a heart, too.

Top 5 ways to green up your wardrobe

By this point we've all heard how important it is to buy eco-friendly products, and that includes fashion. But is it all just hype? Just another marketing gimmick employed by corporate America to try and get us to spend more dollars but feel less guilty about doing it? Many companies have been accused of greenwashing, and it's certainly true that buy buy buy is not the way to help our environment.

No matter what though, people will always want to dress in a way that makes them feel good about the way they look. We shouldn't have to compromise style in our quest to save the planet. Sure, we need to adjust our habits, but that doesn't mean that we'll all end up looking like a bunch of dirty hippies. Here's our list of the top 5 ways to really green up your wardrobe.

Keeping it Simple

Simply put, Simple brand shoes have always ruled, but their ecoSNEAKS and GreenToe (Green Piggies for the kiddies) lines are so fantastic that we feel a bit guilty wearing anything else.

Simple started out as a "stereotypical, anti-stereotype brand offering good shoes." They claim to have learned a few things along the way, and we are inclined to believe them. They say the biggest lesson thus far is this: "HOW we make our shoes is just as important as WHY we make them."

Indie Designer Interviews: Moop

The following is part of an ongoing segment I call Indie Designer Interviews.

Tell me a little about yourself and your company.
I'm Wendy, the owner, operator, designer, model, seamstress, copy editor, accountant, ad rep, pin pusher, house keeper, material sourcing researcher, etc. of Moop. Moop is a small company (myself and my husband) devoted to well designed and fabricated handmade bags. We're working really hard to grow Moop into something that will last a long long time. I feel like I'm in a unique position to take advantage of the attention and energy surrounding Moop to keep this going with a focus on sustainability (80% of every bag comes from up-cycled materials left over from major manufacturers and fabric wholesalers) and fair labor (as we grow we're committed to keeping things here in house, not outsourcing to fabricators).

How did you get started as a designer? I started this business before I knew it would even be a business. I was a teenage single mom looking for a way to make clothes for my kid that didn't look like every other kid on the block, so I bought a sewing machine and taught myself to make things. 10 years later, armed with two degrees (a BFA and an MFA), a husband, a lovely 10 year old girl, a cat named Mouse and a really big sewing machine, I started Moop with one pretty alright bag. That bag has since become a really great bag..refined, honed, modern, understated and really well made.

Who are your favorite designers? I love Built by Wendy (there's no relation). Last season she had this cotton ripstop shift dress that I was completely in love with. I finally decided to order one, only to find they were sold out in my size and every size close to it. I've been thinking of it ever since. So, maybe in a weird way, that dress influenced some bags. I work a lot with ripstop. I love the subtlety of the grid.

Save the planet, wear Simple Shoes

Simple Shoes are made to appeal to the hippy in all of us. They are made out of all sustainable materials, such as hemp, recycled car tires, organic cotton and bamboo. And no, contrary to popular belief, hemp is not marijuana. To quote the Simple Shoes website, "I mean really, if the hemp we use in our shoes got you high, don't you think we'd have enough money to hire some models for our ads?"

Not only are the shoes made from sustainable materials, but Simple Shoes is committed to making their business 100% sustainable as well.

To do that, they ship with less packaging materials, and use boxes made from post consumer paper or biodegradable bags (you can bury the bag in your garden and forget about it). They even clean their office with biodegradable cleaning products! It's nice to see a company fully commit to a green lifestyle, rather than selling green products just because it's trendy right now.

Some of the styles may be a bit too hippyish for the mainstream fashionista, but I'm telling you, the next time I need comfortable sneakers, I know where I'm going to buy them. As a bonus, they also sell adorable baby shoes, some nice messenger bags and even a laptop bag with a button made out of a coconut!

While maybe not quite on the cutting edge of fashion, they still have some very cute, very basic shoes. You won't find any four inch stilettos at Simple Shoes. But, you will find great flip flops and sneakers that are easy on the eyes and easy on the conscious, for those of you more environmentally aware types.

Browse through the gallery, and if you like what you see, head on over to their to buy shoes and support a great company!

Jack Johnson sings in summertime style

I'm so ready for summer. Winter is all fun and games until the holidays are over, and then it's just cold and crappy for no reason (other than scientific). I'm ready to spend my days wearing shorts and flip-flops with my toes in the sand and a drink in my hand. I want to be warm.

Enter the music of Jack Johnson. I bought his new CD, Sleep Through the Static, and I have officially put winter behind me (my back is to the door).

I could go on and on about the "greeness" of Jack. The album is sold in sleeves made from recycled materials and was recorded using 100% solar energy. Take that Amp. However, as awesome as that it, I'm not writing to share the effects on my conscience, but rather the thawing of my soul. You can use that if you want.

Jack Johnson
is the soundtrack to summertime. It's hard to listen to his music without skipping right to bikini season. I want to fill an ice chest with beer and invite some friends over to sit in the yard and laugh about our kids and our lives. It's a good feeling.

What does this have to do with style you ask? Everything, my friends, everything.

Sushi as a daybed

sushi daybedNo, no. It's not slabs of raw fish stacked on top of each other to create a daybed. The Sushi Daybed by PIE is a rattan frame that's been tightly wrapped with hand-woven water hyacinth. While "water hyancinth" certainly sounds sophisticated (and expensive), the sushi daybed is more than just an eye-catchingly designed piece of home furniture. Water hyacinth, like certain other plants, is a highly renewable natural fiber that grows so quickly that it is often considered a weed. PIE has taken that which would be an environmental nuisance and made it into something functionla and fashionable.

The Sushi daybed is available with a cushion made of either 100% cotton or Polyurethane plastic cushion and sells for $3,600 at Vivavi.

Eco-friendly wooden sunglasses

Sunglasses generally come in one of two materials: metal or plastic. iWood Ecodesigns has now thrown a third material into the sun-shading mix: sustainable wood. Like pricey hybrid cars and recycled designer denim, iWood sunglasses would certainly fit into the category of ecoluxury.

Made from high-quality, sustainable wood veneer with quality components and Italian lenses, these unusual sunglasses have all the cache of a pair of pricey Prada shades without any of the sweat-shop labor or the easily knocked-off design.

Hippie-free eco-friendly shoes

The phrase "eco-friendly shoes" usually conjures up images of Birkenstock sandals and boring sneakers. However, the British footwear company Terra Plana is doing its best to change your mind about what it means to wear earth-friendly footwear. Using chrome-free leathers and recycled materials like rubber soles and foam foot beds, Terra Plana's shoes make green living look good with exceptional design and cutting-edge style. In addition to the requisite sandals and sneakers you would expect from a eco-friendly shoemaker, Terra Plana's women's line also includes some very unexpected chic heels and trendy boots. My favorite shoe has to be the Juniper heel in black. I love the round toe, the cone heel, and the lime green accent areas.

Could you fit your groceries in your bra?

Triumph, a Japanese lingerie company just released a new convertible bra that doubles as a shopping bag. In an effort to discourage women from using plastic shopping bags (oh-so bad for the environment), the company designed a bra with cup padding that expanded into a satchel. The bra straps can be tied together as a tasteful handle for the eco-friendly errand tote.

This isn't the first time Triumph has tried to raise social consciousness through lingerie. Last year, the company released a bra that could be heated in the microwave to keep the wearer warmer, thereby saving on energy costs.

I've got to hand it to Triumph. They certainly win the award for the most creative re-use of lingerie, but I'm still not sure I want the bag boy at the grocery store knowing my cup size.

Eco-jeans can be hot

I'm kind of sucker for the idea of sustainably-produced products. I buy organic milk. I use Tom's of Maine toothpaste. And when I moved into my new home, I tore out the carpet and installed bamboo floors instead of wood.

So naturally, my interest is piqued by the idea of sustainably-produced denim. Sarah recently wrote about Levi's new green jeans, but there are a number of denim producers already on the eco-bandwagon.

Sarah has mentioned this brand
before, but for me, it doesn't get any better than Del Fortes's Dahlia jean. With a flattering boot-cut shape and curved back yoke to prevent thong exposure, this jean strikes me as the eco-friendly version of Chip & Pepper's famous Stella jeans (you know, the smart jeans). They'd be good for girls who have a little bit of junk in their trunk.
