Stylelist Poll: Floppy hats hot or cold?

At StyleDash, the summer months present us with a quandary of sorts: how to enjoy the sun without getting baked. Some of us (*ahem* me) will burn at the mere mention of the sun, but the rest of us worry about balancing getting some color without needlessly exposing our skin to harmful UV rays.

Fortunately, fashion has offered us a helping hand via the sunhat. A big, floppy sunhat, while not always fashionable, can do a lot to block the worst of the sun, while still letting us soak up some vitamin D and enjoy the outdoors. Even better, in typical fashionista, well, fashion, big overly dramatic sunhats are becoming quite popular this season.

So our friends at Stylelist have this question for their newest weekly poll: Are you hot or cold on uber-dramatic sunhats?

We think that the right style, worn the right way, can be positively stunning -- but we'd love to know what you think. Vote in the Stylelist poll and then sound-off in the comments!

Please say no to the DIY Sun-in

This week over at Stylelist they have some advice from the pros for at home hair coloring. We acknowledge that going to the salon can get pricey, and if you must do your color at home these are good guidelines to follow. But we must warn you: please use caution and restraint on the slippery slope of do-it-yourself.

We're talking about the scourge of Sun In.

Stylelist poll: Is the Pixie perky or played out?

Now that June is upon us, one of the best ways to fight the heat is with a shorter 'do. On the right type of face, we LOVE the Pixie cut. It is easy to maintain and looks sleek and sophisticated and can be a godsend in those summer months for people with extremely dark hair.

But if a pixie is too short, or if you don't have the type of face that supports short hair -- high cheekbones are a must -- the Pixie can be downright disastrous. Still, as more and more celebs start rocking the short hair (think Rhianna), to sheer or not to sheer becomes a big summer hair question.

So our friends at Stylelist want to know, would you get a pixie cut? Sound off by answering this week's poll and let us know in the comments what you think.

Tip of the day: I want to be a stylist.

Who doesn't? Getting free material is the stuff. Going to fancy parties is where it's at. And being recognized for being able to pick clothing out of a closet, dab on lipstick or put hair into a ponytail? Wowza sign us up!

But getting to that higher level requires a little work and know how. Let's take a look at how to get yourself that stylin' position you've always wanted.

Chanel's new shoes are cocked and loaded

Talk about dressing to kill! At Resort 2009, Chanel brought out the big guns, err, literally. In addition to the fashions, the models also brandished some pistol stilettos.

But these shoes weren't just for the show, Lagerfeld and Co. will actually be selling these .22 caliber heels! We know Bonnie & Clyde were fashion icons, but gun shoes? Really?

So StyleList wants to know, would you buy these shoes? Take their poll this week and let them know if these are something you would like to ar yourself with, or if the whole concept turns you off.

Take StyleList's "ultimate" SATC quiz

A few weeks ago, we asked for your submissions for StyleList's ultimate Sex and the City fan quiz. You responded and now those questions, along with some other great brain-teasers, are in the final quiz, available now!

So grab a cosmo and sit back and test your SATC knowledge!

For anyone who needs a SATC cram-session before taking the quiz or watching the movie, the complete series is now available on iTunes. The Sex and the City movie opened this past weekend.

Stylelist poll: The female tuxedo

Karl Lagerfeld showed off a lot of looks in the Chanel show at Resort 2009, but the look that really caught our eye -- and the eye of our sister site StyeList -- was the femme tuxedo.

The femme tuxedo trend is hardly new, Lanvin featured a tux in their Spring '08 show and celebrities from Ellen DeGeneres to Charlize Theron have worn tuxedos or tuxedo-inspired suits on the red carpet.

So that brings us to this week's StyleList poll: Would you wear a female tuxedo? Do you find the trend tasteful or tacky? Go vote over at StyleList and sound off in the comments!

Veronica Lake's perennial coif

We were awed by John Galliano's collection for Christian Dior at Resort 2009. To us, the models with their sixties-influenced clothing and vibrant color palette look like Barbie dolls come to life. Fabulous!

Of course, the clothes weren't the only fabulous part of the show, we were equally awed by the Veronica Lake-esque hairstyles sported on the runway. For us, when it comes to "ultimate" hair icons, Veronica Lake takes the cake. Like, it's not even a discussion.

But those Stylelist people are at it again with the hair poll, and they want to know your opinion on Veronica Lake inspired dos. So what do you think, forever fashionable or tedious and tired? Go cast your vote!

Helena Bonham-Carter and the tale of the scary hair day(s)

The shiny perfection of a professional blowout is dreamy. We figure that's the best part about being a celeb, having a stylist to do your hair and make up before every appearance. The mystery is why, in the name of St. Joan Rivers On The Red Carpet, do so many of them show up with ratty hair and unflattering makeup?

Stylelist has a post about good hair/bad hair with some doozies. The Olsens are definitely big offenders, but they have nothing on Helena Bonham-Carter. We adore her, but her hair...words fail.

We know everyone can't be Cate Blanchett, but the world would be a better place if more of them tried to. Revisit Helena's many dramatic "appearances" in the gallery.

The tiara: Yay or nay

The tiara, the accessory long associated with royalty, weddings and beauty pageants, is popping up everywhere. With celebrities like Paris Hilton, Avril Lavigne and Fergie (right) donning diamond (or diamond-looking) head pieces and designers like Caroline Charles showcasing the tiara in her Spring 20008 show, we have to ask: is the tiara the new hotness?

Today's StyleList poll poses an even more pointed question: would you wear a tiara?

While we can't pull the tiara off (well, maybe if it was for our wedding), we applaud those that can and have fun laughing at those who cannot.

What do you think? Head over to Styelist and cast your vote!

Kind folks sweeten bad reviews with a little good news, too

Two weekends ago we wore a new party dress. In the scramble out the door we forgot to do that last minute Any Mistakes? double-check.

We were excited to see event pictures until confronted by the one of ourselves wearing The Wrong Shoes and no earrings. Gack! We had to go find a good picture from another night just to feel calm again.

It got us to thinking, this must be what it's like for celebs, flipping through a magazine and seeing yourself at the back, in the What Not To Wear files. Do they keep a library of past appearances in best dressed spreads, just to stay sane?

We determined that it would be a kindness to combine the good news with the bad, so we were pleased to see that Stylelist is doing just that, in a feature that shows celebs getting it wrong, and then getting it right.

We think Hollywood will approve. Based on personal experience, a spoonful of sugar really does make the medicine go down easier.

Beauty for dummies. And smarties.

We're getting addicted to the Stylelist how-to slide shows. Today our sister site is showcasing a slew of easy to use make-up items and there are a couple of killer finds in there.

At first we felt a little, well, superior. After all, we have mad make-up skillz, earned through years of clown faced experiments. And the first item in the gallery was that Sally Hansen nail pen we posted about a month ago. Um, yawn.

But then we were very pleasantly surprised by the rest of the products. Not just easy to use, they are also cool!

Flashback: Not pink eye, pink eyeshadow

Stylelist has a how to guide for wearing colored eyeliner, which is totally fun, and balances really well with all the brights we're seeing for clothes this season.

Clicking through the looks gave us sweet 80s nostalgia. Purple eyeliner! Sparkly green! Ah, ninth grade! Then we came across a pictures of lip liner and vivid pink blush and had to laugh.

Gwen Stefani, style inspiration

Recently our sister site Stylelist did a beauty evolution slideshow of Gwen Stefani. She had a lot of kooky looks, that Gwen. Blue hair, bindis, and that red, red lipstick. Something about that story stayed on our minds, and we finally figured it out.

Gwen owned every single look, no matter how off the wall or potentially unflattering. True, some worked better than others, but she always seemed comfortable with herself and really excited about her style. And because of that she looked terrific all the time.

We could all benefit by taking a page out of Gwen's book, and just go for it once in a while.

To cut or not to cut: Some (not so) big bang theories for your hair

According to StyleList, bangs continue to be a hot trend, but how do you know if they're right for you? You could, of course, try out some fake bangs to get the look. But, if that's not for you, there are a few bang facts you need to know before you make the cut -- remember, it takes FOREVER to grow them out.

The main things to take into account before cutting bangs are your hair type, face shape, and the amount of effort you're willing to put into it.
