Tip of the Day: Celeb favs, skincare

We've all seen celebrities doing product endorsement (Lindsay Lohan and her Ariva gum boxes) or swearing up and down they have never needed Botox at the ripe old age of 50 because of this miracle cream. Then there are the times when you catch them talking about a product out of the blue – one that they might actual use and not get paid for.

Here are favorite celebrity skincare products, you know, the ones that don't just pretend to use but actually slather on every day.

Tip of the Day: It's the ROC!

No we don't mean Jay-Z's record label or the Republic of China. We mean ROC skincare. As the website clearly states it has been "the skin care leader in France since 1957," and we believe it. Though many products come and go from our insanely full medicine cabinet, ROC has been a staple. Just stopping usage for a few weeks in between purchases we saw the difference and it wasn't pretty. Now we stockpile ROC and *fingers crossed* will look as good as those zexy French ladies do.

Here's a little taste of what this award winning (plenty of "Best of's" in Self, Allure, etc.) line has to offer you.

Tip of the day: Make your own lip balm

Don't scurred... do it yourself! There are plenty of reasons to make your own lip balm. It's healthier than the more chemically processed stuff. You know just what's going in. It's easy. It'll help you go easy on your dough stacks (or lack thereof). They make a great gift. Yada, yada, yada.

Here are three tried and true recipes that we love to slave away over the hot stove for.

Tip of the day: Raccoon eyes be gone

Ugh, waking up in the morning is a drag. Puffy under eyes and sometimes dark circles – ew! And the most common culprits probably aren't the ones you think they are. Let's take a look.

Stila review: Perfecting concealer

The nice folks at Stila sent us some samples so we could try their products first hand. We spread the bounty across two bloggers, Kristen Seymour and Cat Lincoln, who will share their reactions with you this week.

Stila's Perfecting Concealer is a semi-matte concealer designed to hide "under eye circles, scars, redness, and other imperfections."

We were really excited to try this out because, even after getting a full night's sleep, we tend to have under eye circles, but now that we're no longer 18, some concealers and foundations end up making our smile lines (because we do not have wrinkles -- our face is simply used to smiling and being happy) more obvious.

Tip of the day: You are what you eat

Juicy! There is no denying the truth behind the phrase, "You are what you eat." A perfect example is the huge zit you always get after housing a greasy pizza. You can also put a positive spin on the saying and change the way you eat for good.

Summer is the best time to kick start better eating habits for your skin, hair, body, and even your mind. There is so much juicy fruit and yummy grilled chicken around that it's easier to say no to macaroni salad and the ice cream man.

Decoding your skin type

Are you looking to update your skin care products or makeup now that the summer sun is starting to shine? Before you end up with a drawer full of fancy new products, make sure you know what your skin truly needs.

This article, at Divine Caroline, gives the lowdown on how to read and evaluate your skin. The type of products you use should be based on your skin type, so you need to know whether your skin is sensitive or not, as well as whether it is dry, oily, normal, or combination.

Beauty Olympics: Have you been training?

Have you spent the winter months holed up in the bathroom, trying out various beauty products to find the perfect lipstick / eye shadow / concealer / lotion / shampoo / etc.? If not, don't sweat it -- Second City Style has done the work for you.

The Second City Style Beauty Olympics have been in the works for months, with staff members and readers testing hundreds of products out and giving their honest opinions on everything from makeup to skincare to hair, supplements, fragrances, and more.

The women reviewing the products ran the gamut from stylists and editors to students and doctors, and not only did they say whether they liked or disliked the products -- they explained why. It's a really helpful guide that you might want to check out before you need your next lip gloss fix. You get those too, right?

Mmm foot candy, mint moisture stick

organic beauty peppermint foot stickFeet are gross (they just are) but there are plenty of products out there that can make them less gross. The times that I find my feet are the scariest is when I take off my shoes for yoga class. It's like "gee, my feet didn't look this crappy when I woke up this morning" Luckily there is a quick solution that can easily be tossed in your yoga bag ... Deep Steep Natural Candy Mint Moisture Stick.

This handy stick is loaded with cocoa butter, echinacea, vitamin E, as well as botanical extracts and emollient oils. All of that good stuff will result in super-soft skin and who doesn't like that?

I like this stick because it's so easy to just keep in your bag, it smells nice, it's organic, and it doesn't feel greasy on your skin. Oh and did I mention it was dirt-cheap? Yeah this magical stick is only $5 -- better get a couple.

Indie Designer Interviews: Anita Grant Natural Hair & Skin Care

I'm a big fan of all of the amazing independent designers out there. In an effort to get inside the mind of the indie designer and find out just what makes all of these creative types tick, I present to you an ongoing segment I call Indie Designer Interviews.

Tell me a little about your company.
On December 5th, 2005 AnitaGrant.com was created, by the all round self-proclaimed cosmetic-label-reader-ingredient junkie-mixtress, Anita. At anitagrant.com we believe in cultural focus by purchasing directly from farming communities and/or partnerships with fair trade suppliers throughout the world, helping to maintain economic independence & cultural survival. Using a variety of plant-based ingredients from different countries around the globe; we are celebrating ecological & cultural diversity.

How did you get started running your business? It wasn't until I blistered my hands using a store bought bottle of so called "safe synthetics" that I decided not to purchase another off the shelf hair care product again. Since 2005, I've been making my own brand of natural and organic skin care and hair care. You shouldn't need a degree in bio-chemistry to understand the ingredient list of a hair care or skin care product label. It was a bit difficult at first to decipher all the Latin (INCI) nomenclature of the ingredients and separate the "bozwellox" from true benefits but I got there in the end. It's so liberating to be able to read the label of a product, understand the ingredients contained within and say "NATURALLY, I can do better."

What are your top fashion & beauty must-haves? If I were trapped on a desert island it better be one with a Coconut tree and fresh Coconuts hanging from it. I would cut it open and eat the fresh white meat, rub a bit of the Coconut water on my hands and moisturize my skin and curly Afro hair with it - loads of uses.

Bleach for where the sun don't reach

south beach lightening gellI...I'm not quite sure...uh...what they mean by "sensitive areas."

Okay, I do know what they mean, and I was a little more than amused when I realized that South Beach Lightening Gel for Sensitive Areas was for bleaching that little twinkling star that never sees the sunshine. I'm not exactly sure why anyone would feel the need to bleach that particular area, but apparently, there are enough people out there that the company makes a product.

In all fairness, the product description says that the Lightening Gel is perfect for "Breasts, Nipples, Underarms, Faces, Age Spots, Other Skin Discolorations" so if you're worried about any of those things, try it out. And if you happen to dab a little "down there," no one will know the better.
