Tip of the Day: It's the ROC!

No we don't mean Jay-Z's record label or the Republic of China. We mean ROC skincare. As the website clearly states it has been "the skin care leader in France since 1957," and we believe it. Though many products come and go from our insanely full medicine cabinet, ROC has been a staple. Just stopping usage for a few weeks in between purchases we saw the difference and it wasn't pretty. Now we stockpile ROC and *fingers crossed* will look as good as those zexy French ladies do.

Here's a little taste of what this award winning (plenty of "Best of's" in Self, Allure, etc.) line has to offer you.

Pharrell tires of tats, grows new skin to cover them

Now that he's getting older, Pharrell Williams no longer thinks his tattoos look good on him, and so he will be undergoing a revolutionary process to cover them up ... with his own skin. It's basically like a skin graft, the 35-year-old singer told Vogue, only "you're not taking skin from your ass or your legs. These guys actually grow the skin for you."

Tip of the day: You are what you eat

Juicy! There is no denying the truth behind the phrase, "You are what you eat." A perfect example is the huge zit you always get after housing a greasy pizza. You can also put a positive spin on the saying and change the way you eat for good.

Summer is the best time to kick start better eating habits for your skin, hair, body, and even your mind. There is so much juicy fruit and yummy grilled chicken around that it's easier to say no to macaroni salad and the ice cream man.

eBay WTF of the Day: Toad bag

Ribbit.WTF? Toad bag? Don't you mean "tote bag?" This is crazy talk.

This is not a "tote" bag. No. This is a toad bag. From Australia. Like Fosters pretends to be.

Has anyone ever looked at a toad and thought "mmmm...handbag?" WTF?

Decoding your skin type

Are you looking to update your skin care products or makeup now that the summer sun is starting to shine? Before you end up with a drawer full of fancy new products, make sure you know what your skin truly needs.

This article, at Divine Caroline, gives the lowdown on how to read and evaluate your skin. The type of products you use should be based on your skin type, so you need to know whether your skin is sensitive or not, as well as whether it is dry, oily, normal, or combination.

Got something to hide? Cover FX.

Ideal for covering scars, bruises, burns, tattoos, rashes and any other skin irregularity. It was an evening in March 2008 (yesterday). I was acting in a show where my costume exposed my bare shoulders. I had recently been to yoga and attempted a pose I cannot pronounce or spell. It resulted in bruises; unsightly shoulder bruises and a good leg one, large enough to be seen by the audience. Cue panic.

After some asking around about what people use to cover tattoos and such, I discovered Cover FX at Sephora. I decided to head down to the Soho store and get some help.

The young lady who assisted me matched my skin tone perfectly to some cream foundation (pictured above). The color really is uncanny, and the feel of the makeup is surprisingly lightweight for being very close to opaque. Made from 100% healthy minerals, Cover FX covered up my bruises and made my skin look even smoother than it was in the first place! It even looks good close-up. I would use this on a night out to cover up leg scars, sunburn, and any other area of discolored skin.

I highly recommend Cover FX. I swear they're not paying me to write this. They saved my night.

Victoria Beckham's enormous pores

We're all used to seeing our favorite celebs on TV, magazine covers, and in movies -- but as you're probably well aware, the lights, make-up (and excessive use of Photoshop) make already attractive people into shockingly gorgeous uber-humans. So what do they look like for real?

Victoria Beckham, apparently, is one celeb who's hottness doesn't hold up when you get up close and personal. At the Marc Jacobs after party following the designer's runway show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, one guest told New York Magazine he'd "commit suicide" if he had Posh's complexion, because "Her skin is yellow with big pores." So big, in fact that "Each pore you could fit a big [piece of] caviar in."

Zing!

Though, it's worth noting that the guest was Michael Lucas, a porn star. Not that his profession completely derails his credibility, but anyone who's willing to have sex on camera with random strangers just so they can be in "movies" would probably say anything for a little attention. I'm just sayin'.

Sephora knows beauty is more than skin deep

Sephora wants to be more than just your spot for cosmetics and perfume, the chain is creating a new, in-store beauty concept emphasizing nutritional supplements and drinks. WWD reports that the new line will start in France and if it works out, then it will sell in other countries. Sephora now has a consulting nutritionist who will create beauty regimens combining nutritional supplements and drinks as well as skin care for a total health program.
The beauty bars will have around ten brands of supplements and drinks including Fushi, Dr. Perricone and Dr. Murad. Sephora stores in the U.S. currently sell the Borba brand, a line of drinks and supplements that have benefits for the skin.

Is Valentine's Day candy bad for your skin?

High on my list of favorite beauty blogs, is The Beauty Brains, a blog which brings you beauty news but with a bit of science. This week they are tackling a bunch of Valentine-related themes including the rather thorny question: is sugar bad for the skin?

As a sugar-addicted person I was hoping they say no. I know that theory that chocolate causes acne has been said to be a fiction (although my grandfather, a world-famous dermatologist always swore that chocolate led to pimples) but what about all sweet stuff? The Beauty Brains report that Susan Van Dyke, M.D. of Van Dyke Laser and Skin in Scottsdale tells of hospital studies in which test groups given sugar did not break out more. But a 2002 study by Loren Cordain, a Ph.D. from the University of Colorado thinks that a high sugar diet causes a change in insulin production leading to acne.

The worse news for old bags like me is that sugar could cause wrinkles. Some dermatologists think that high levels of blood sugar can make the skin stiff leading to wrinkles. There is no definitive research yet but so far, the news doesn't look promising. So now the only question remaining for me is vanity or candy, which will win out?

Style in the year 2020: flashy lights?

philips design probe program skinMovies from 'Blade Runner' to 'Minority Report' have tried to predict the future of styles. And who knows, maybe mini-skirts will be back in fashion when the 23rd century rolls around... But Philips, the company currently showing off these amazing LED-based fabrics, predicts flashy, emoting fabrics will be all the rage in 2020. Witness their Design Probe program: SKIN. From what I can tell, it's a futuristic version of the mood ring, designed to be worn all over and respond to your emotional state. What's next? Maybe you'll be able to show what websites your thinking about on your t-shirts. Or maybe that is a very bad idea...
