Why aren't you wearing this? Quilted Preppy Duffle

Filed under: Handbags, Accessories, Must Haves

Going back to school means going back to lots of other things -- back to gym class, or basketball practice, or slumber parties after the Friday night football game. And while you could toss your stuff in your regular backpack, we suggest something a little more stylish.

Five dresses - Striped stars

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

This week we brought you five fabulous variations of the striped dress - and not one of them will make you look like Marcel Marceu, proving that stripes are no longer the exclusive province of mimes and Galouises smokers.

Instead we showed that stripes can look traditionally nautical or futuristic chic, it all depends on the accessories. In case you haven't noticed, that is a continuing theme here - that you should never deny yourself the pleasure of expressing yourself via fashion because you thought that some trend or look was "only" worn by a certain type. We aim to show you variations (five, to be precise) of any given theme and prove to you that they can work for anyone. It all depends on what you want to show the world, and of course, where you're going.

Shoes of the day - Studio Pollini ruffle peep toe

Filed under: Accessories, Shoes, Must Haves

The cobalt blue color of these Italian patent leather flats pretty much make them preppy perfection, but the ruffle ribbon and buckle detail is what sold us - it risks being too "girly" (though we're still not convinced there is such a thing) but instead manages to work in a very modern way. We also like that the formality of the shoe is downplayed by the peep-toe styling. All in all it's a fun shoe that lets play out your country club fantasies - assuming that's your thing!

Dress of the day - J. G. Hook Coastal Stripe Dress

Filed under: Clothing, Dresses, Must Haves

It's entirely possible that we've been watching too much "Mad Men" but we're completely smitten with the show - of course the retro fashions and yes, we admit it, Don Draper (and his starched white shirts) may have something to do with this obsession.

Lilly Pulitzer - Preppy now has a scent

Filed under: Style in the News, Fragrance

As Cat mentioned earlier this summer, we have a bit of a "thing" for the bright colors and pineapple patterns of Lilly Pulitzer. Truth be told, we're not even closet Lilly fans -- we have a full-on preppy thing going in our closet, and we don't care who knows it.

However, even we know that sometimes preppy isn't the look you need. A bright pink and green shift decorated with margarita glasses and parrots is great for mid-day cocktails in Ft. Lauderdale, but not for lunch with the ladies on the Upper East Side. So, for those days when you need to dress a little darker, but still want to indulge your inner Lilly, there is a fragrance. Actually, there are three.

Why aren't you wearing this? Women's Grosgrain Ribbon Belt

Belts can do so much more than just hold up a saggy pair of pants. The right belt can finish an outfit. It can create a waistline. And, it can make a boring outfit trendy, classic, or, in the case of this belt, preppy.

Why aren't you wearing this? Cream Ribbon Triple Headband

Filed under: Accessories, Hair Care, Daily Obsession, Must Haves

You know what we love? A sleek, shiny, preppy ribbon holding back our hair. But, do you know what we hate? The fact that ribbons never stay in place in our hair! Especially if we try to put multiple ribbons in there -- forget it.

However, with the right headband, we might still be able to get the look our locks long for.

Why aren't you wearing this? Double-strand seahorse necklace

Summer trends can be so much fun. Currently, we're really enjoying the nautical trend -- navy and white, khakis, boat shoes, etc. And, when if we really want to play up that trend, we have no problem choosing accessories that, with anything else, would look a bit costumey. You know, shapes like sand dollars and starfish can make for some really fun jewelry!

Why aren't you wearing this? Skinny Silk Wrapped Headband

Filed under: Accessories, Hair Care, Must Haves

When you're looking for a little something to add to your 'do, you don't always want something big and bulky, and something bright and bold might not work with the rest of your outfit. But you still need a little something -- a little color or texture or bling.

We think this Cara Accessories Skinny Silk Wrapped Headband, available at Nordstrom for $44, is perfect for that. There is some fun color and texture there, so it can give your look a lift, but it's not so attention-grabbing that it really needs to match what you're wearing.

A secret craving for pink and green that only Lilly Pulitzer can satisfy

Filed under: Handbags, Accessories, Clothing, Dresses, Celebrities with Style

We must confess: Deep in the pit of our black goth heart, we totally dig preppy stuff. Not just that punky plaid stuff. We're talking clothes that pair pink with green. Orange with turquoise. Bright yellow with more yellow.

It goes with the dream of a summer place on the Vineyard, preferably next door to Carly Simon. In the closet would be a vivid Lilly Pulitzer dress- and capri-filled wardrobe. We would also be pleasantly buzzed on G&Ts all day long, and tan without freckles or skin cancer.

Why aren't you wearing this? Beaded Paisley Necklace

We love the preppy look. However, it's one of those things that's easy to do full-out, but sometimes a little harder to pull off in a more subtle fashion. Most items are either preppy or they're not. End of story.

Why aren't you wearing this? Pink madras fabric sandal

Filed under: Accessories, Shoes, Must Haves

It's always fun to add a splash of color or an interesting pattern with your shoes, especially in the summer when your legs tend to be more bare. And, as we've mentioned before, we kind of love a preppy plaid. So what could be better than wearing a fun, bright plaid as a shoe?

Collar pop, lock and drop

Filed under: Men, Celebrity Fashion Mistakes

preppyToday as I was driving down Hollywood Blvd., I was nearly cut off by a retro looking convertible with a preppy looking doofus inside the vehicle. I was shocked, not because I was nearly cut off (no one in LA can drive) but because that doofus looked like he stepped straight out of the 1980s.

He had on black Ray Ban-esque sunglasses, a green polo style shirt with the collar popped and a cardigan draped over his shoulders. I mean, I was on Hollywood Blvd. so maybe it was the set of movie ... but no, it wasn't. He was in his car with a semi-ordinary looking girl and I didn't see any camera equipment nearby. It was just a preppy fool.

The last time I saw such a horrible display of preppy fashion was months ago when I was in Washington, DC. I was equally horrified. I just have to wonder why, why would anyone attempt to revive such a horrible moment in fashion history? Is it because they want to protect their necks from those dangerous UV rays? If so, just put on some SPF and you will be just fine, because the poppin' your collar solution just isn't working.
