Songbird Alicia Keys was casual and cool in an appearance on MTV's TRL. Her girly Malandrino Darling sweater was offset but a pair of comfy Akademiks jeans. But these weren't just any jeans. Friends, these jeans are stitched in Godiva. Not only can you eat creamy Godiva chocolate, you can wear it too!

Alicia set the simple pieces off with a pair of hoop earrings and a cool silver Nooka watch.

So. Our economy sucks. No, really! Just ask these guys. And as a consequence, that extra fifty bucks one has leftover after paying all of their bills is probably going towards a gas stipend or in their savings account.

But we're kind of reckless and we all love to consume, especially things that are not in our budget, so clothing brands are coming up with all types of absurd marketing plans to convince us that even in this recession, we can not live with out designer duds.

Case in point: Levi's will be joining the Logo unit for MTV networks for a campaign entitled, "Logo Unbuttoned." It gets its name from the Levi's 501 campaign that first debuted in July, "Live Unbuttoned." So, to review: Levi's has temporarily hijacked the title of the gay and lesbian oriented Logo network so it can "be the sole sponsor of a program block that Logo plans to introduce on Oct. 12, "Saturday Nights Unbuttoned Presented by Levi's," which will run from 1 to 3 a.m. on Sunday mornings."

Will our ultra amazing gay and lesbian brothers and sisters be more inclined to purchase Levi's 501 jeans once the campaign ends on October 12th? No. But we give the denim label an 'A' for effort.

Brooke Hogan is undoubtedly going through a rough time right now, what with her brother in jail, her parents' public divorce, and her mother going after a 19-year-old. But, we thought maybe, just maybe, she would try extra hard to come across as a classy young lady at the MTV VMAs. You know, to prove she's above it all. But, alas, no.

Alright so did anyone think that Ciara looked completely smokin' at the VMA's? It was near impossible not to as she smoothly made her rounds in the dress du jour - a short, silver sparkler. Her Christian Loub's, Jimmy Choo star studded clutch, and black waist cinching belt made interviewer Taylor Swift swoon. So much so that Swift said out loud that she had an "outfit crush." Although that is pretty embarrassing to say on national TV, we totally have one too!

Although the outfit was so completely fly that we hardly noticed anything else, Ciara's faux bob certainly deserves an honorable mention.

Britney Spears took home three Moon Men for "Piece of Me" to celebrate the 25th MTV Video Music Awards.

Growing up it was legends like Metallica, Beastie Boys, Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Now the closest thing to rock and roll on that stage is Tokio Hotel and Russel Brand's haircut, which he admits can be mistaken for mental illness. Brand poked fun at the Jonas Brothers "vow of celibacy," for which he later apologized -- but who should be apologizing for their outfits? Who deserves awards for their red carpet ensembles?

Britney Spears in Versace tops the list of best dressed. I've covered her from her glory days to nasty divorce court appearances. It hasn't been the smoothest road, but she's coming out on top.

We rely on rock stars, rappers--and yes, even reality-show regulars--to set trends. It's a responsibility that, we admit, requires some risk.

But with risk does not always come reward. And at Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards, we saw more than one example of that.

Here are a few of the valiant red-carpet efforts (and one complete lack thereof, thanks to Fatman Scoop) that we just can't condone:

We're watching: The VMA's
We're wearing: A lot of black and a lot of satin
We're eating: M&Ms, sorted by color or you're fired
We're drinking: Water in glass bottles only at room temperature. And Cristal.
We're thinking: Pink would be really good in West Side Story, but only as that punky girl who wanted to be in the gang probably.
Not over it: The Fingerless Glove's new competitor: The Handless Glove

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were recently named by Vanity Fair as the Best Dressed Couple of 2008, which is pretty impressive since they spent a good portion of this year in hospital gowns.

According to FameCrawler the celebrity couple "beat out Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore and fashion don't Victoria and David Beckham."

Speaking of the Jolie-Pitts, did you know that they had twins? It's true!

The dress that Lindsay Lohan wore to the MTV Movie Awards was killer. We mean, the face and hair were a little lackluster, actually a lot lackluster. And we didn't particularly agree with the red nails against the purple dress.

But that little purple confection... mmm mm! It is D & G after all so we guess that explains it. Wow, those guys really can make anyone look good in anything. JK LL! LY!

I worked on the yellow carpet for video game sensation Rock Band while the Universal Studios back lot burnt down. It took two hours to get to press check-in. I was on a stage at the very end of the carpet with some skilled video-game designers who have a knack for virtual rocking. From Stone Temple Pilots to Queens of the Stone Age, these guys knew every four-button combo of every song.

Being at the end of the carpet, most didn't want to stop, let alone play a three minute karaoke version of Bon Jovi's "Wanted Dead or Alive." I got some good talent nonetheless: Carson Daly, Cisco Adler, the Pussycat Dolls, Tila Tequila and so many others.

Whit Honea is a slacker, a borderline degenerate, and a daydream believer. He's also our resident expert on casual chic. If it's comfortable, and not heinous, he's all over it. He's quite charming, really.

We really like Vintage Vantage, and not just because they were soaked in voting controversy (guess where it started? We're looking at you Florida) or that they are officially at war with the country of Denmark, valid reasons they both may be. No, we like them because they make great shirts.

We're aren't sure whether is was before or after enrolling in the fake fashion design school that she attends every week on MTV's hit reality how The Hills, but somewhere in between taping episodes Lauren Conrad began to fancy herself as a real-life bonafide designer.

Did we fall asleep and dream ourselves back into the 90's when Claire Danes was the envy of teenage girls for kissing Leo DiCaprio in Romeo and Juliet and hanging out with dreamy Jordan every day on My So Called Life? We're not sure, but apparently Miss Danes is still celebrity enough to land a huge contract with Gucci.
