Scentsational: Neutrogena Comforting Butter Body Wash

We hate the bother of applying moisturizer after the shower. It's messy, cold, and time consuming, the three horsemen of "Next time."

Our skin is saved by the one million moisturizing body washes with magic ingredients ranging from shea butter to glitter oil. They'll never take the place of real moisturizers, but sure do buy some time before your elbows get red and cracked.

Neutrogena Comforting Butter Body Wash is our current favorite, although for non-moisturizer related reasons. Oh, it's got shea butter, and mango and cocoa butter, so it makes you plenty soft. But we'd use it if it gave us green scales just to get a whiff of the addictive, faintly tropical, vanilla scent.

Seriously, go down to the drugstore and smell it. You will be powerless to resist the comfort of this body wash!

Drugstore Beauty Queen: Smith's Rosebud Salve

rosebud salveqIf the fashion forecasters are right and the era of the enormous handbag is coming to a close, then you might have to rethink that veritable cosmetics counter you are carrying around in your purse.

If you have to do some space budgeting and are restricted to a few essentials, make sure that Smith's Rosebud Salve from Bigelow Chemists is one of the keepers. The salve is most commonly used as a lip balm, but I happen to have fairly dry skin, and dab the stuff on dry patches on my face and even on my hands. Sure, it has a floral fragrance, which is something I normally don't like, especially on my lips, where the idea of "eating" flowers grosses me out, but the rose scent is pretty light, and after a while, I don't notice it.

Rosebud Salve is about $6.

Are you feeling Positively Radiant ®?

Like a good girl, I wear sunscreen everyday -- even in the winter. I'm so consistent in my avoidance of the sun that I let myself get away with being self-righteous every once in a while. That was until a girlfriend of mine -- a doctor, no less -- informed me that my daily SPF 15 sunscreen probably did not cut the mustard. She recommended I bump it up to SPF 30.

For the last week, I've been using Aveeno's Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer, which, as it turns out, is the only moisturizer at my neighborhood CVS that comes with SPF 30. (I guess that makes me a user by default, doesn't it?) Regardless, I'm quite impressed with the way the lotion evens out my skin. I can already tell a difference in texture and the tone of my face. What is that difference? Well, everything just seems like a little more Positively Radiant ®.

It's the end of summer, where's my tan?

Summer is a time for all of us to enjoy vacationing on the beaches of Paradise Island, Hawaii, Jamaica, or any other sunny spot around the world. And when you return from these vacations at the end of summer, you girls are supposed to show it -- with a tan.

But what about those of you who either don't get any time off (or can't afford it!) or those of you who just can't manage to soak up any of those summertime rays (darn you, fair-skinned complexion!)?

It's time to immerse yourself in self-tanning knowledge. iVillage has an array of articles to get you "glowing" like you just stepped off the plane from Aruba.

A few tips -- Use gloves (or wash your hands periodically throughout the application process). Exfoliate your skin beforehand! Make sure your skin is dry. Apply just like a moisturizer. And finally, take your time -- everything needs at least 30 minutes to dry thoroughly.

Lip balm replaces fortune cookies

At my normal choice of restaurants, the farewell gift from the server is either a cheap breathmint or a fortune cookie (which I love, mind you).

But awhile back at the Blue Pointe restaurant in Atlanta, I experienced something different -- either my server thought I had terribly chapped lips or he just thought he should give something back after such an expensive meal.

The restaurant gives every patron a 0.5 ounce tube of Kiehl's Lip Balm #1, which, according to my server, is the new "cool" lip moisturizer.

The sample-size tube retails for $5.50 on Kiehl's website. I'm not sure, but I think my lips looked and felt just a little bit cooler using a lip balm from a trendy restaurant.

Avon: back in blue

We've all seen the Avon ladies and been overwhelmed with the array of lotions and face creams that they bring and add to our significant other's collection. All you can do is sigh -- you know she can't say "NO!" to the saleswoman and will most likely end up taking cash from your wallet.

Today, however, is your lucky day, guys (or gals, if you're purchasing for him). Avon has introduced "Avon Men," and is proving that it's O.K. for you guys, too, to care about how your skin looks and feels. The new "for men" products can be found at avonmen.com.

Don't worry – you won't be purchasing "Bust-Sculpt Contouring Cream" or "Beautifully Protected Daily UV Moisturizer." Along with the changes in the actual products, Avon has (wisely) changed the names. You'll have "PROSport Soothing After Shave Balm" and "PROExtreme Advanced Eye Cream," which you certainly won't be afraid to showoff on your bathroom counter.
