Crazy cravings: Shiseido Dick Page summer collection kit at Sephora

Maybe it's the magic words "limited edition" or that it has the word "summer" in the name, but we're totally having to fight the urge to spend $126 on this Shiseido make up kit.

Shiseido Artistic Director Dick Page put this palette together, and the description on Sephora.com is filled with glowy-this and shimmery-that. Plus the kit comes with blotting papers. And directions! So much neat new stuff to play with.

Be okay, we must admit that the yellow and green eyeshadows would probably look kind of scary on most people, including us.

Plus, we're pretty sure we can pick up bronzer, mascara, lipstick and a couple of kooky colored eyeshadows down at Walgreens for under $30. It wouldn't come in a neat-o case, but it might get us out of these early summer make up doldrums, and save $100.

Tip of the day: Make your own lip balm

Don't scurred... do it yourself! There are plenty of reasons to make your own lip balm. It's healthier than the more chemically processed stuff. You know just what's going in. It's easy. It'll help you go easy on your dough stacks (or lack thereof). They make a great gift. Yada, yada, yada.

Here are three tried and true recipes that we love to slave away over the hot stove for.

Tip of the day: How to avoid summer makeup meltdown

Most of us love the summertime – the sun, the beach, the warmth, the runny makeup... okay, so maybe we don't love all of it. When the weather is hot and you're sweating your face off literally, it is time to readjust your makeup routine so you don't look like a hot mess for the next three months.

Stila review: long wear lip color

The nice folks at Stila sent us some samples so we could try their products first hand. We spread the bounty across two bloggers Kristen Seymour and Cat Lincoln, who will share their reactions with you this week.

Our second Stila product for review was Long Wear Lip Color. We've admitted before that we're lazy about reapplying lip color, so we were excited to try one that purported to be a soft-on-the lips hybrid gloss, with serious staying power.

We rotated the three colors over the course of a week:
  • Serenade -- golden red (weekend brunch color)
  • Coquette -- pink mauve (tasteful day wear)
  • Rendezvous -- brown reddish (dramatic night out)

Stila review: Lip glaze

The nice folks at Stila sent us some samples so we could try their products first hand. We spread the bounty across two bloggers, Kristen Seymour and Cat Lincoln, who will share their reactions with you this week.

First of all, we are huge fans of lip gloss -- it's seriously one of the easiest ways to make yourself look just a little more put together at the last minute. Stila's lip glaze is a best seller, and they call it "an essential addition to any beauty bag."

Kat Von D makeup at Sephora

You'd expect Kat Von D to have her make up tattoo'd on, right? Us too! So we were surprised to see that she has an exclusive new line of make up at Sephora.

It's a limited line, just a couple of smokey eyeshadow palettes, four lipsticks and some liquid liners. Oh, and a brush kit they refer to as "cool tattools." Sigh. Everyone with the puns.

Pro-to-Go applicator the latest cool thing from...Avon? Yes, Avon!

Reese Witherspoon caught our eye in the ads for Avon's new Pro-to-Go lipstick. We thought, that's nice but a bit surprising to see someone so A-list shilling for Avon. Still, a single mom's gotta do what she's gotta do, right?

Then we noticed the incredibly nifty lipstick applicator and all thoughts of Reese flew out of our head. It's designed so that you can flick it open, apply, and flick it closed with just one hand. So cool!

Tip of the day: Cosmetic lifespans

Many of us gals have been the victim of expired cosmetics. Here's the scenario. After seeing pics of that smokin' gloss we used to wear in high school, we rush to our beauty closet only to open the tube to a rank stank that we don't understand. Most beauty products do not have any smell, or if they do, it is very faint. If you start noticing some product BO, it's because that favorite gloss is dying a slow, bacteria-invested death in that dark, tightly sealed tube. Once the product has peaked, it can cause some pretty gross irritations or infections if used. To avoid all of the above, follow these general toss time guidelines.

Discovering stains

We always forget to reapply lipstick. It's just one of those character flaws that we are resigned to living with. Which would be fine if we had a lighter hand with the eyeliner. A naked mouth on a faceful of makeup can look really unbalanced.

Fortunately we found stains, which give a bit of color, a lot of staying power, and are easy to use. Just apply stain before you lipstick or gloss, and even if you talk/eat off all of your lipstick, at the end of the night you'll still have some color on your mouth.

We also love stains because they can be multi-purposed as blusher, without that grandma-ish powdery feel. One quick swipe and you have a fetching glow.

So versatile, so pretty. And so many to choose from. The best of the best in the gallery.

Flashback: Not pink eye, pink eyeshadow

Stylelist has a how to guide for wearing colored eyeliner, which is totally fun, and balances really well with all the brights we're seeing for clothes this season.

Clicking through the looks gave us sweet 80s nostalgia. Purple eyeliner! Sparkly green! Ah, ninth grade! Then we came across a pictures of lip liner and vivid pink blush and had to laugh.

The Daria Collection

Last year, supermodel Daria Werbowy signed a major contract with Lancome cosmetics. If that wasn't enough, the beauty company asked Daria to create a limited-edition three-piece makeup collection.

The Daria collection will be sold exclusively at Sephora stores starting sometime this month and will consist of a Color Fever lipstick in Beige Caracai ($26); Lipgloss in Nude Prainha ($24), and Color Design Eyeshadow Quad in Carnet de Velours ($42).

Is Heatherette coming to MAC counters sooner than expected?

Richie Rich and Traver Rains -- the funky duo behind Heatherette -- broke many hearts when they didn't put on a proper runway production this season at New York Fashion Week.

But I'm almost certain that their highly-anticipated makeup collection with MAC Cosmetics is going to mend all of the hurting glitter-loving hearts out there.

According to Specktra, the release date for the Heatherette line has been changed from March 27th to 20th. Yes, beauty fanatics. This means that we'll all be able play with the Barbie-esque pink lipstick and silver metallic nail polish this Thursday.

Apparently, there was such a high demand for the Heatherette collection that MAC bumped the release date up so people could get there hands on the collection sooner.

Either way, everything is going to sell-out really fast, so I hope everyone has their credit cards out and ready to charge. I do.

Is there lead in your lipstick?

Wearing lipstick? Careful, more than half the brands on the market were recently found to contain lead.

This according to a new report from the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, highlighted in a post on our partner site, Green Daily. The study actually found lead in 61% of the lipsticks they tested, and in one third of those cases, the products contained more lead than what the FDA allows in candy, which, seeing as lipstick gets ingested, is pretty gross.

Because the FDA doesn't have a set limit for lead in lipstick, there's no incentive for companies to keep it out of their products, much less tell you if it's in there in the first place. Subsequently, it's hard for consumers to tell what's safe and what's not since popular brand names like Cover Girl, L'Oreal and Christian Dior were implicated.

The good news is that you can see the full report, including the amount of lead the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics found in each lipstick on the organization's website.

Lipstick crimes and misdemeanors

Sam Rindy really loves art. She loves it so much that she's now facing a fine of 4,500 euros ($6,320) for expressing her affections with a tube of red lipstick. Rindy is accused of "savagery" after she left a red-lipped stain on a Cy Twombly painting valued at $2 million. The owner of the untitled, plain white painting demands $2 million in damages as well as an additional 33,400 euros for the work's restoration.

Rindy's attorneys put forth a defense that would raise eyebrows among the world's sharkiest lawyers. Her counsel claims she was "overcome with passion ... by an emotion that she could not tame." The July lipstick vandalizing was an "act of love".

Needless to say, if Rindy is acquitted, the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence better step up its security because I can only imagine the number of tourists who would risk life and limb for a chance to plant a wet one on Michelangelo's David.

Lipstick light lets you apply in the dark

I'm not sure how often most women find themselves stuck in the dark and desperate to apply some lip gloss, but -- just in case that ever happens -- ModelCo has a new product just for you: the Lip Light.

The only difference between this and normal lip gloss is that there's a small LED light hidden in the lid, so it shines on your lips while you're applying. Novel, sure, but probably not all that useful outside of your favorite dimly-lit nightclub. Even then -- how hard is to find your mouth?

That said, the little light might come in handy for other things, like digging through your purse, or, um ... Ok, so I can't think of anything else you'd use this for. But it's lip gloss -- and it lights up!
