PETA: send the Olsens some birthday hair

It's been a while since PETA came up with an idea hilarious enough to win us over, but this one has truly awesome/disgusting/ridiculous potential. It's centered around the fact that it's the Olsen twins' birthday this Friday -- the 13th -- and PETA wants the twins to receive some freaky gifts in the mail. Their idea: to have all fur-haters send them a birthday package containing some hair clippings and a note that says 'please, use my hair instead of the animals.'

Nicknamed the Trollsen Twins by PETA's Olsen-hating website -- Hairy Kate and Trashley -- the animal rights group apparently hates them because they use fur in the celebrity clothing line. We're OK with fur, but we think we might send some beard trimmings anyway -- just for a laugh. The sad thing about this gag is knowing that some poor intern will end up being the one to open all the disgusting hair packages.

Did Lindsay Lohan steal an $11,000 fur coat?

Yeah, probably. But this is still technically an "accusation," so there's no official word on whether or not the new Ugly Betty guest star will be spending time behind bars.

Our favorite part of this story is that LiLo didn't "accidentally" walk out with this from some ritzy Beverly Hills boutique. Instead she ripped off the coat from some woman she was partying with.

eBay WTF of the Day: Toad bag

Ribbit.WTF? Toad bag? Don't you mean "tote bag?" This is crazy talk.

This is not a "tote" bag. No. This is a toad bag. From Australia. Like Fosters pretends to be.

Has anyone ever looked at a toad and thought "mmmm...handbag?" WTF?

The possum fur controversy

Oh hi, I ate your forest.
Earth Day is not only a day to celebrate the Earth, but also a day to examine our own beliefs about what we think is good for the planet. By thinking and talking about our beliefs, we can help each other make mindful choices. This will mean that next year, we can have Earth Day again, and not Sad-Mass-Formerly-Known-As-Earth Day.

So. Some people think it is good for the environment to support possum fur industries. Environmentally-conscious fur? Is that an oxymoron?

eBay WTF of the day: Genuine alligator purse with leglets

My leglets, let me show you them.

We feel a little creeped out when someone is wearing the head of any animal in nearly all cases (that includes you, Bjork).

We usually see it in fur; it's like the furrier decides "what a pretty mink" and then decides to give us a little TMI.

Well, this problem is sort of like that. Behold, Db6525's "Unusual Genuine Alligator Purse."

PETA sends Beyonce a wedding gift

Despite all the 'are they really married?' rumors that are flying around the internet, we feel it's safe to say that Beyonce and Jay-Z have actually tied the knot. Why do we suddenly feel so confident? Because PETA sent Beyonce a wedding gift -- and when the uber-informed PETA seems sure, we figure it's a safe bet. So, what did they send the fur-loving superstar who, consequently, was a victim of one of their most sneaky celeb-attacks yet? A faux-fur throw of course.

In 2006, PETA won a charity auction on Ebay to eat lunch with the pop diva and jumped on the opportunity to show Beyonce one of their famously graphic DVDs about animal slaughter. Now, with this wedding gift, we have to wonder if PETA has gone soft. It's hard to tell whether the gift was meant to be tongue-in-cheek or not, but we interpret this as a sincere gesture of good will from the animal rights org. Maybe they're just afraid to be on Jay-Z's bad side? We would be.

Bringing home the Bacon Bra

Whit Honea is a slacker, a borderline degenerate, and a daydream believer. He's also our resident expert on casual chic. If it's comfortable, and not heinous, he's all over it. He's quite charming, really.

Peanut butter and chocolate? Sure, those are two great tastes that go great together, but let's face it, they're no longer shocking the world with their combined novelty. The time as come for Reese's to step aside, there's a new cup in town, and it ain't kosher.

Aretha Franklin vs. PETA update

Kyle reported back in February that PETA was awarding Aretha Franklin with the distinguished title of Worst Dressed Celebrity in 2008. In a follow up to that tasty bit of news, I read today that PETA is offering the Queen of Soul a way to redeem herself in the eyes of the fur-hating masses.

It seems that Aretha has run into some hard times, financially speaking, and she's let her $700,000 Detroit home go into foreclosure. When PETA heard about this, they jumped at the chance to play the hero and offered to pay the $19,000 in back taxes on the property. There is one condition though: Aretha has to promise that she will never wear fur again. Read PETA's letter to Ms. Franklin here.

Love your pet? Wear him!

I have two dogs and I love them like they're my kids (other than the whole sticking them in a crate thing -- I hear you're not supposed to do that with human children). However, when I saw the following headline, I thought that maybe, just maybe, this couple had taken things a little too far:

Hair of the dog: The animal lovers who turned their dead pets' coats into woolly jumpers.

Thanks for that, Daily Mail.

But, actually, it's not as creepy as it sounds. Beth and Brian Willis learned from their breeder that their white Samoyed's fur makes great clothing, so while the dog was still alive, they had a sweater knitted from the fur she had shed. It's apparently extremely warm and durable and softer than alpaca. They went on to have clothing knitted from their other dog's fur, too -- I'm sure she was feeling left out.

According to the article, making clothing from the fur of long-haired dogs is fairly common (Did you know that? I didn't!). I guess it makes sense -- instead of clogging up your vacuum with dog hair, create some furry fashion. I'm just not sure I'm ready to wear my pooches in any form, no matter how cozy it might be. How about you?

PETA's worst dressed list includes Eva Longoria, Kylie Minogue and Lindsay Lohan

PETA has given the crown of worst dressed celebrity of the year to Miss Aretha Franklin. Lauren already talked about how Queen of Soul is notorious for mistreating her ladies, but apparently she's also notorious for mistreating animals via wearing fur. PETA says, "How 'bout some R-E-S-P-E-C-T for animals? Aretha, when you waddled into the Grammys in yet another vulgar fur, you looked as if you were going to perform 'I Am the Walrus' by the Beatles. You might be a queen, but you don't know jack about compassion."

And that's not once, but twice in the past month that they have attacked Aretha for her weight. PETA recently sent her an open letter saying, "Music lovers may think of you as a 'queen,' but to animal lovers, you are a court jester . . . Why not shed the old-fashioned look that adds pounds to your frame and detracts from your beautiful voice?"

Gallery: Celebs who wear fur

Really, was it necessary to bring up Aretha's extra poundage? I think PETA could get their point across without going there.

Coming in as runners up on PETA's annual worst dress online poll are Lindsay Lohan, Eva Longoria, Kylie Minogue, Kate Moss and Marilyn Manson. Respectively, PETA calls Lindsay Lohan "skanky," Kate Moss is a "super tramp" and Eva Longoria is a "streetwalker."

I guess PETA just wanted to remind us why they aren't known for their subtleness. Remember their parody of the Olsen's? They have a whole website called "Meet the Trollsen Twins."

Really, I think it's silly that PETA thinks attacking celebs will stop them from wearing fur. Don't get me wrong, I'm not big on wearing anything that was once cute and furry either. Cruelty to animals is not the answer, but nor is cruelty to celebrities. Make love, not war, PETA!

New York Trendspotting: Real women wear fur

FashionKitty's
I noticed something while I was in New York covering Fashion Week -- all of the fabulous women were wearing fur. Seriously, you could tell the rich from the poor just by looking at their coats, although their $800 shoes were pretty revealing too. It made me green with envy. I had never in my life wanted a fur coat but suddenly after being so close to them I started to realize what the big deal was all about.

Fur coats are an instant way to chicify your look but buying new fur can be quite expensive. So for me, the best option for purchasing fur is buying it vintage, which seems much more human anyway (twisted reasoning, sure).

Here are some tips for buying vintage fur:

1.) Buy a modern silhouette- You don't want to look like Cruella de Ville with a tacky fur coat down to your ankles do you? Check out what is "in" for today's furs and try to find a vintage piece to match.

2.) Buy from a reputable vintage shop- If you go to any random shop you might end up with a fur that wasn't cared for properly, which for you would wind up being a waste of money. Good vintage shop owners are particular about the pieces they choose and they only take the best.

3.) Wear it with pride- Don't let any fur haters get you down! It's your coat and you spent your money on it -- those PETA meanies need to mind their own business.

PETA pulls a sneak attack on DK

It may seem painfully obvious to most of us, but often times misguided animal rights crusaders fail to recognize the boundaries of decency or taste. While nearly all normal, well-adjusted human beings understand that it's extremely rude to sneak into someone's home and force them to watch a gruesome DVD of animals being slaughtered -- apparently, the folks at PETA do not. And you thought that door-to-door vacuum salesman was pushy.

Last Wednesday, PETA sent a "fashionably dressed" young woman to Donna Karan's Manhattan apartment armed with a tray of lattes and a portable DVD player. Some poor, formerly employed doorman was fooled by the guise and let the PETA agent into the residence, thinking she was making a delivery. She hovered around waiting for Karan to return, shoving the DVD player in DK's face when she arrived and showing her images of animals being skinned and butchered for their pelts.

Taken aback, DK let the infiltrator know that she needed to leave and told her that "I've seen all these [videos], but for me it's just purses and accessories." Then she released the hounds, who quickly mauled and ate the intrude all up. Just kidding. Way to go DK, way to take a stand for fur!

New York Fashion Week: Venexiana

venexiana fashion week fall 2008I had never heard of Venexiana before last night's show but I was hopeful when it kicked off with flashing blue lights and music so loud it made the floor shake. The first few looks from the collection were equally impressive with furs so lavish they would make Ivana Trump jealous. However, the rest of the collection was a disappointment to say the least.

The whole collection was very "chi-chi I am better than you" with models stomping down the runway with tight ringlet curls pinned up in a very 1940's fashion. And what says, "I am better than you" more than a great piece of fur. Once I saw the fur coats, fur trim, fur accessories, fur everything I immediately scribbled "F- you fur" in my notebook because that is the kind of message it was giving off.

Gallery: Venexiana Fall 2008

I have to admit I got pretty excited when I saw all of the fur but my excitement fizzled as the show took a turn for the worse with this insane Dynasty look. It was scary as hell. Silken pajama-like ensembles, metallic, lame, leg 'o' mutton sleeves, and patterns only Bill Cosby would love, made this collection a horror.

There were some key trends in there that were also evident in other shows, so I guess it wasn't a complete waste of time. Some key takeaway trends are: asymmetrical silhouettes, cut-outs, deep V (in front and back), large sleeves, criss-cross straps (back), 1980's inspiration and the color yellow.

Stella McCartney hates virtual fur

Stella McCartney, a long-time advocate for animal rights and a staunch opponent of fur in the fashion industry, is taking her cause to the virtual space. But the new anti-fur protest won't be an email campaign, or an online survey, or even a new website -- it will take place in real time, entirely within Second Life.

Starting on July 12th at 7pm, McCartney will launch a PETA island with the virtual world, and Second Life's millions of users will be invited for a week-long party, where they'll be able to buy virtual veggie burgers, listen to a "live" DJ, and hang out with simulated animals.

Guests who attend the protest will be encouraged to submit anti-fur messages -- similar to PETA's "I'd rather go naked than wear fur" mantra -- which will be displayed on the island for all to see. The best ideas will win Stella McCartney prizes, and all purchases made during the protest will support PETA, so if you're an Internet geek who loves animals and is into fashion -- this is your event!
