iPhone: How do I love Thee?

Filed under: Accessories, Style in the News, Men

On Christmas morning there was one gift left. It was for me. I was a bit surprised as I had already been sufficiently spoiled by all in attendance. I opened the box and looked inside. An iPhone was resting there, gentle and content. Oh, how my heart skipped. I jumped up, still in my pajamas and announced to the 9 family members around me that I would be back momentarily. I had an iPhone and I loved it so much that I just had to be alone.

Actually, what I really said was, "I'm going to take this behind the middle school and get it pregnant." Yes, I stole that line from Tracy Morgan, but damn, I really loved it.

I still do.

The iPhone is sleek and stylish. It is compact and powerful. It is a laptop in your pocket. I'm writing this post on it right now. In a park. That is what the kids call a tax write-off. I'm also using it to listen to Seu Jorge on the built in iPod. When I'm done here I might watch a movie. I rented some flicks off of iTunes and I purchased Season 1 of MTV's classic sketch comedy show "The State."

I won't. I don't want to show off, plus I have kids to play with. I promised them Daddy would be "it" as soon as I was done writing this love letter. Yes, that's exactly what it is.

Now excuse me, I have a phone call.

Victoria's Secret sale: Selfish guys find last minute gifts!

Filed under: Swimwear & Lingerie, Steals and Deals

Racking your brain trying to think of a last minute gift for the special lady in your life? There's only four shopping days left until Christmas. So if you've been putting it off, the time to act is right now.

I know, I know -- sometimes it's hard to think of what to give someone else. Maybe this year you shouldn't bother trying to be considerate, and instead get her something that you'll really enjoy -- sexy lingerie! Even better, is that Victoria's Secret has just launched their Semi-Annual Sale, so you can buy the hottest undies at almost half the price.

It's a Christmas miracle!

Guy gift ideas: Try a watch

Filed under: Holiday Style, Accessories, Men

As I've mentioned before, I'm sure it's not easy to figure out what you man might want for Christmas. If you don't feel like shelling out hundreds of dollars for a Wii, or a new set of state-of-the-art power tools, stick to what you're good at. There's a number of small things he'd never buy for himself that, if taken care of, would make him significantly more stylish (which is great when you need to show him off to friends, colleagues, etc -- right?).

Like a watch, for instance. My guess is he either doesn't wear one, or has some ugly black, rubber, sporty thing that's somehow still ticking away from when he was in high school. Gently encourage him to start dressing like a grown up with one of these classy Timex or Casio watches on Target.com. They're functional, straightforward, and stylish -- but also aren't absurdly expensive.

The best part, is that until December 31st, the watches are 5-15% off. Check it out!

What to wear to the office Christmas party

You're likely to see some style disasters around the office this time of year. Not that there's anything wrong with being festive, but trust me -- the blinking Rudolph sweater is best left in the closet.

But while most fashion foul-ups are easy to spot, others will sneak up on you -- especially as you're asked to socialize with co-workers outside the office (like at your annual holiday party, for instance). Dress too wacky, too sexy, or just plain bad, and the boss is likely to see a side of your personality you'd probably rather they didn't.

Follow these tips to make sure you don't find yourself applying for a new job in the New Year:

  • Keep it under control-- dress up too much and it'll look like the office party is the only night out you've had since last year.
  • If you want to show off, use your accessories (nice watches for guys, a stylish bag for the ladies).
  • Stay true to your company culture. If you work at Google, I'm sure you can wear whatever you want. But if you're a Wall Street financial analyst, you'll probably want to err on the conservative side -- even if the invitation says "casual."
  • Remember: just because you're not at the office, doesn't mean the normal office rules don't apply.

Essentially, be careful. Because your co-workers only see you in "work mode," it's tempting to go overboard with an outfit that says "this is who I really am!" But on Monday you'll be back in the office -- hopefully with no regrets.

Santa hates you

Does the thought of another holiday filled with over-crowded malls, fighting families, and incessantly jolly tunes about gift-giving fat men make you cringe? Don't worry, Scrooge, Urban Outfitters has your back.

They've created this not so subtle "Santa Claus Hates You" t-shirt, which prominently features 'ol Kris Kringle giving those saccharine seasonal revelers the finger. That's that!

While at first glance, this shirt is kind of funny, it's also trying way too hard (just like everything else you'll find at Urban Outfitters). That said, I can see it working in colder climates -- peaking through multiple layers, partially covered by your scarf, so that anyone who catches the message will be surprised (and not affronted).

A word of caution though: avoid wearing this around kids. As parent, I can assure you that one look at this disgruntled version of St. Nick will send children into snotty, tearful hysterics -- leaving you to deal with some very angry moms and dads, who are probably already about to snap from all the holiday-related stress. I'm just sayin'.

Ho, Ho, Horrible: The worst in holiday attire

Ho, Ho, Horrible: The Worst in Holiday Fashion
The holidays are a time of cheer, giving, snow, miracles, and all of that good stuff. However with the good always comes the bad. The bad can be anything from your drunken uncle singing "jingle bells" at the top of his lungs or your senile great aunt trying to name off all of Santa's reindeers. Those bad holiday moments are things that I can handle. What I can't handle is bad holiday fashion. Here are the top 8 holiday style fouls that hopefully no one reading this blog has ever committed.

The holiday sweater: Perhaps the deadliest of holiday sins! I believe people wear these sweaters to express how much they love the holidays. I know it can be hard to express love but a sweater isn't the answer. Try eating a candy cane instead.

The holiday brooch:
While the brooch is a lot less extreme than say a holiday sweater, a tacky holiday brooch can ruin what was a perfectly good outfit.

The Santa hat: These hats should only be allowed on one class of people; people who are being paid to look like Santa. Paid is the key word here.

Holiday ties:
When you wear a tie you are telling the world "Its business time." When you wear a holiday tie you are telling the world "I don't want a holiday bonus this year."

Ornament earrings:
Save the ornaments for the tree sweetie, these earrings are always a bad idea.

Napoleon Dynamite boots:
Baby, I know it's cold outside but looking like a 1980's reject is never a good look.

Jingle bell jewelry:
Because no one wants to hear you "jingle" before you walk into a room.

Holiday shoes: These shoes just break my heart. If you own a pair of shoes like these you may as well give up now and go join the circus.

Nothing makes me think of Christmas more than....wasabi?

Filed under: Holiday Style, Haute Home, Stores We Love, Accessories

One of my favorite Christmas decorating ideas is to take colors that don't traditionally have anything to do with Christmas and make them holiday perfect.

West Elm (a site I know I mention frequently) is one of the best at taking different hues and shades and blending them together in a look that is unmistakably Christmas, but with a fresh face. This year, West Elm seems to be leaning towards wasabi greens and teal blues (gentle and calming but somehow not pastel) contrasted with dark blacks and charcoals for maximum impact.

These ornaments are a perfect example of how Christmas decorations can be both trendy and classic, all at the same time. The leafy shape and glittering, ice-encrusted look of the crystals are traditional Christmas, but the wasabi, teal, clear, and black color combinations are very contemporary.

A set of three ornaments retails for $15 at westelm.com

The right-hand ring: Good idea, or just good marketing?

Filed under: Holiday Style, Accessories, Style in the News

Industrious women are buying rings for their right hand to celebrate their independence, hard work, and accomplishments. Or are they?

As the holiday season approaches and we are inundated with Christmas jewelry ads, I am seeing more and more campaigns aimed at "power women" with gorgeous and dazzling diamond settings designed (supposedly) for right-hand wear only. The styles, sizes and settings are billed as fun, flirty, and a deviation from the traditional wedding/engagement bands. "Treat yourself -- you've earned it! Women work and can buy for themselves!" scream the ads in large print, placed in women-centric magazines and television programming.

While I love a diamond as much as the next gal, I have to wonder if this isn't all a clever marketing trick, designed specifically to prey on our culture's current obsession with working, powerful women and mothers. And even if it is such a ploy, is it harmless, or should we be worried? American consumerism is great, and is largely why our opportunistic country can thrive the way it does. But do we really need another Hallmark Holiday, wrapped up in shiny paper and aimed directly at some perceived flock of unwitting female consumers with money to burn?

Or, perhaps, I'm just being a Christmas Scrooge. What do you think about the right-hand ring?

Tim Gunn's secret passion

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

The ever-stylish and suave Tim Gunn, chairman of the fashion design department at Parsons the New School for Design and my favorite part of Bravo TV's Project Runway, reports that architectural design professionals "All hate fashion".

While this may seem unlikely, given that clothing and architectural design are similar in so many ways, Gunn insists that it is so. "I had a colleague tell me that fashion is the lowest form of culture," says Gunn, in an interview with the New York Times. Never one to be rattled by much, Gunn insists that he is not offended by the animosity. "They're [fashion and architecture] both an infrastructure on which to put a skin or surface," he explains, and goes on to tell the story of how he first fell in love with architecture.

The story centers around a calendar the 10-year old Gunn received from his grandmother at Christmas. Each month of the calendar featured a French chateau to cut out and assemble, and by New Year's Day, Gunn had finished the entire calendar. Gunn moved on to designing and assembling his sister's Barbie houses, and with those types of accomplishments under his belt, found his first adult job after art school designing models for an architecture firm.

With a distinguished career built upon fashion and clothing design rather than architecture, Gunn has turned his love for building model homes into a hobby. He collects pop-up books of buildings and carefully searches for furniture and cupboard pieces that emit the aura of the perfect architectural aesthetic.

Celebrate good...beer?

We're deep into the cool days of autumn, and soon the frigid nights of winter will arrive. With the changing of the seasons, the brewmasters of the world bring us a little something special: seasonal beers. Last night, it was cold and rainy here in Georgia, and I decided it was time to tap into the world of a winter brew.

My choice? Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale. I had a couple reasons for my pick: (1) I'm of a fan of the year-round Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, (2) The label was so enticing -- I just couldn't resist. The picture of the snow-covered cottage and Christmas-colored text made it feel like December (and it just looks cool).

I'm usually one to pick more of a rare brew, rather than mainstream, but the Celebration Ale is just plain good. It's got a very strong taste ("robust" in beer terminology) and will leave that warm, satisfied feeling in your stomach and in your face. The Sierra Nevada website lists several awards for this ale, along with a quote from the San Francisco Chronicle: "...best beer ever made in America."

It's always more interesting to try beers like this, instead of sticking to the standard brews!
