Two new blogs with style: Aisledash and GreenDaily

Filed under: Style in the News, Style for a Cause

aisledahs and greendaily
Weblogs is one big bloggy family, and we're getting bigger! If you haven't already noticed the announcement at the top of the page, we've just launched two new blogs, Aisledash and GreenDaily.

We here at Styledash are pretty excited about Aisledash, partly because it's name rhymes with ours, and partly because weddings, whether you love them or hate them, are still always a great excuse to get dressed up. Of course, if you're planning on getting married, Aisledash is a great resource for all things wedding.

Sure, Styledash blogs about eco-friendly fashion, but GreenDaily is our family's first blog dedicated entirely to green living, whether it's grocery shopping, driving, and of course, our favorite, fashion.

See Jack Shop: a budget shopping blog for men

See Jack ShopThe Internets normally don't have much to offer the everyday fashionable dude. There are hoards of sites devoted to shopping for, commenting on, and bitching about all kinds of women's clothing, but the only men's outfits you find discussed on most fashion blogs probably cost more than the car you drove in college.

So thank goodness for See Jack Shop, a site dedicated to middle-of-the-road, stylish clothes for the guy who likes to dress well, but isn't making six figures. The looks featured go from dress casual to very casual -- with posts on everything from Perry Ellis Sharkskin pants for the office to Led Zeppelin vintage tees for rocking out on the weekend.

Check it out, dudes. You've now run out of excuses for dressing like a slob.

New fashion site: Notcouture

Filed under: Handbags, Accessories, Style in the News, Clothing, Shoes, Vintage & Retro, Swimwear & Lingerie, Jeans, Men, Dresses

notcouture
As you know, we at Styledash love sharing style blogs with our readers as we come across them in our daily (hourly?) jaunts through the fashionweb, so we could hardly contain ourselves when we found out that design blog NOTCOT had branched out into fashion with Notcouture (excellent play on their original name!).

Not quite a blog, not quite a social site, Notcouture allows fashionistas to sign-up and submit images that link to sites, blog posts, and stores. The result is a gorgeous gallery of clothes, handbags, jewelry, and just about anything else that looks good. Because they launched recently, they've partnered with various stores and brands for discounts and giveaways, so it's definitely worth a peek.

Finding the fashion blogger that's right for you

Filed under: Accessories, Clothing, Shoes, Dresses, Kids and Babies

Susan WagnerThere's an enormous number of fashion and style sites around the interwebs. While it'd be impossible to read (or even find) these hundreds of thousands of sites, the good news is that with all these perspectives, you're almost certain to find one that speaks to you.

If you're the kind of person that finds ultra-pricey, or uber-trendy fashion out of reach (or just obnoxious), and have been looking for a voice of reason to guide you through the insanity -- look no further than Susan Wagner.

Susan is a style writing machine -- she maintains 4 sites (3 of them related to fashion), and can give you advice on everything from comfort to cost-cutting to what to wear when you're expecting. Check out Friday Style for common sense fashion advice, Work It, Mom! for clothes you can wear before and after the baby arrives, or get a sampling of everything on Susan's BlogHer blog.

And for parents, there's also Susan's personal blog, Friday Playdate.

Sarah Jessica Parker thinks bloggers who make fun of her fashion line are stupid

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

Sarah Jessica Parker thinks all the criticism on blogs of her underwhelming new clothing line is "foolish."

The blogworld's response to the star's line at Steve and Barry's has been decidedly tepid. But during a recent interview with the Minneapolis Star and Tribune, SJP basically called the criticism invalid, saying her clothes are for the everyday woman, and were never intended to impress the fashion industry.

"These clothes are about people all over the country who don't have access to really well made, affordable clothing. It's wonderful that people in the fashion industry can borrow things, and have the money and the financial means, never mind the logistical access to clothes that are very fashionable and of the moment. What's really important is that women in this country, really, really feel good about who they are and that we make things affordable and accessible. So there's no criticism that a person can make about it. It's really important that women in this country have an opportunity to have the things that all of us who do have the financial means can have."

There's more here. I only re-posted the intelligible parts.

What's interesting, is that the women SJP is reaching out to (as if they were some charity case) aren't buying the clothes, and the collection was launched with an exclusive party for the fashion industry.

Sounds like sour grapes to me.

Anna Wintour hates blogs?

According to the New York Post, Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour has taken her discriminating sense of fashion and applied it to language. Just as Wintour has put the kibosh on celebrity designers in her magazine, she has put the kibosh on the word 'blog'. As Vogue gears up for its bright new media future, Wintour has run up against the net term. In her quest to avoid 'blog', she's even gone so far as to ask her staff to come up with a new term for the concept.

It's rare for me to agree with old Anna, but in this situation we're in lock step with one another. If you want to know why, it's the 'og' phoneme that really bugs me, not the blog itself.

So Anna, if your crackerjack staff comes up with something better, let me know.

The Sartorialist looks at kids

Filed under: Style in the News, Kids and Babies

sartorialist kidsOne of the more popular fashion and style blogs out there is The Sartorialist, based in New York. The Sartorialist is known for snapping photos of people in their natural, fashionist states, on the street. A few days ago, The Sartorialist posted that he will be contributing to Cookie, the InStyle/Lucky-style magazine for kids and babies. His contributions will be called "Sartorialist, Jr." with the same sort of "street-style" capture, but instead of regular-sized people, his subjects will be of the smaller set.

From BloggingBaby, we get this random side note: "if you'll read the post, you'll find that The Sartorialist used to be a stay-at-home dad." Now who knew a stay-at-home Dad could have such an eye for style?

Meet Fashionista.com

Filed under: Style in the News

Back in December, Sarah mentioned that new media entrepreneur Elizabeth Spiers was about to venture into the world of fashion blogging. Using the old bait 'n' switch, Spiers led us to believe that the new site would be called Size0.com. But when the blog actually earlier launched this week, we were all quite surprised to see the site's real name: Fashionista.com. (Wonder what kind of strings she pulled to get that plush domain name...)

So far what I like most about the site is the knowing attitude of the writing (presumably the handiwork of editor Faran Krentcil). Fashionista.com strikes up a balance between the laudatory pandering of Vogue and the downright mean-spirited bile of Gawker. Perhaps that middle ground is not everyone's cup of tea, but for me, there's nothing I love more than fashion writers who call a spade a spade without actually dubbing anyone as "fat" or "ugly".

Are blogs over?

Filed under: Style in the News

I'll be the first one to admit that I have given up on my personal blog. For a long time, I found blogging to be a satisfying, creative outlet during my otherwise dull working day. But after about 8 months of posting, crafting a clever daily entry felt more like a chore and less like like a treat. So when I stopped cold turkey, I felt great and I haven't missed it in the least. My friends and fans -- oh, yes, I had fans -- however, don't feel quite the same way.

When it comes to ex-bloggers, it seems that I'm in good company. According to the technology analysis firm Gartner, the blogging phenomenon is set to peak in 2007 with a predicted level of 100 million active blogs. Estimates also suggest that there are already 200 million now-defunct sites, on every topic from daily living to weird science.

What's the reason for the blog drop-off? Well, as Gartner analyst Darryl Plummer put it: "Everyone thinks they have something to say, until they're put on stage and asked to say it." (Now that sounds familiar.)

So what do you think: is the sun starting to set on the blogosphere?

Decor8 for home style

decor8 blogAs you know, Styledash likes to look good when we go out on the town, but we also like to good when we stay in. That's why we cover stylish interiors (and not-so-stylish, though I can't recall a HomeStyleFoul post yet).

If, however, you can't seem to get enough throw pillows, scented candles, bamboo flooring here on Styledash, might we suggest you head over to Decor8 for a little more than a peek?

Decor8, a blog about "fresh finds for hip spaces," is written by Boston-based freelance writer and interior design consultant Holly Becker. Holly created Decor8 "to catalog things that I love and to reach out to others who share my passion for design and the need for creative living." The things Holly finds are usually colorful and fun, definitely things that would add whimsy to a space.

There's a new blog on the Cusp

Filed under: Stores We Love, Style in the News

blog ont he cuspWe're always looking out for our playmates in the world of fashion and style blogging, and we were more than happy to fall upon Blog on the Cusp.

Blog on the Cusp is the blog of the store Cusp and from their HelloWorld post, they are intending to "give you the Cusp girls' perspective, courtesy of our store managers and employees, who are on the front lines of fashion and shopping trends. They can see a handbag obsession occurring the minute stock arrives in the warehouse." In case you didn't know, Cusp is the younger, hipper sibling of Neiman Marcus. It isn't any cheaper to shop there (i.e. this isn't an "outlet" or "seconds" store); it simply carries clothing and accessories that cater to a crowd that might think of Neiman Marcus as Their first store opened first in McLean, VA, then Century City, CA.

Free People has a blog

Filed under: Stores We Love, Style in the News, Clothing

free people blogIf you're taking a moment to escape the Holiday family hell that's happening in your living room (or maybe that's just at my house) by surfing the Internet, let me introduce you to new a blog that might be fun for you browse.

Free People, the unique, indie-spirited brand that's associated with boutiques like Anthropologie and Urban Outfitters, has a brand new blog (only two months old!) where the writers post about everything from apparel to hollywood. It's nice that they don't always try to push their own brand, too.

Seven Days of Style: Window shopping around the blogosphere

Filed under: Accessories, Clothing, Shoes, Jeans, Dresses, Cosmetics

shoppings bagsWe know that the world of fashion, beauty and style blogs is growing everyday, so in order to help you keep abreast of what's going on, we've picked seven posts from every day this past week from fellow style bloggers around the world. Keep a lookout every weekend for these little blogosphere roundups, and if you'd like to see yourself mentioned here on Styledash, feel free to send us a tip!

Sunday - We spend the previous week in review around the fashion world, and it looks like California Style saw some good stuff over the Voom by Joy Han show duirng LA Fashion Week. "Winter hasn't even started yet and I'm already excited to wear the spring Voom collection."

Monday - Need a little therapy? Closet Therapy takes a cue from Rachel Bilson in a long tunic sweater and tights, then goes out searching for her own. She finds a fw, but still cannot, for the life of her, find a thinly knit black t-shirt dress anywhere!

Tuesday - With the cold weather settling in, and if you're in LA, cold and hot weather, your skin is taking a beating, I'm sure. The Beauty Addict admits that luxury creams are just for show on any nightstand, but the real moisturizing work is done by an industrial power, Sea of Life Mineral Butter with Fig Extract.

Wednesday - Let's meet fashion blogger extraordinaire, Kristopher Dukes, who was just recently mentioned in WWD. She also does a fabulous job of blogging her signature "Ooh la love"-worthy picks from ThisNext.

Thursday - If your fall closet is looking a little drab with brown, gray, and black, I Am Fashion can show you how to add a little bit of the color of the season: red. Barneys Girl picks things from attainable pieces like little jackets from Anthropologie and Urban Outfitter to uber glam look for the red carpet.

Friday - With fashion taking a turn toward "girl" with babydoll dresses and jumpers, Daddy Likey takes a trip down her junior high lane, pointing to a dress from Alloy.

Saturday - Ask-Fashion-Kitty gets an email from a reader asking about what shoes to wear with a chocolate brown dress for a wedding. Would silver shoes be okay? The Fashion Kitty screams "I would rather see clown shoes with that dress than silver shoes!" Her suggestion for staying within the metallics category is a gorgeous gold sandal with a tiny butterfly detail from Saks, or a matching brown shoe with sparkly accents from Stuart Weitzman. Good call, Fashion Kitty.

Victoria Beckham blogs

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style

victoria beckhamAnne might be sick of the Beckhams and glad to see Police Sunglasses and Gillette letting the soccer star go as their front man, but I could never tire of that perfectly posh Mrs. Beckham! And thankfully, even if we may never see either of their mugs plastered on billboard or magazine ads, we can browse the day away over at her new website, dvbstyle.

The site is scheduled to launch on October 30, in conjunction with the release of her new book, That Extra Half Inch. According to the temporary front page of the site, Mrs. Beckham will use the site as a place to "make sure you are the first to know how [her] collections are developing, when exclusive pieces will be available," as well as "webisodes."

Fugly is the new pretty

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Celebrities with Style

You know that idiotic HR question about what you would bring if you were stuck on a deserted island?

Well, if I was deserted on an island and I only could look at one website for the rest of my life, it would definitely be gofugyourself.com.

Why? Because there's nothing more amusing than seeing celebrities in bad clothes. It somehow levels the playing field in a celebrity-obsessed culture in which everything is coached and nothing is spontaneous.

And then there's the also writing. Gofugyourself.com's authors, Jessica and Heather, are hilarious, not to mention urbane, witty and catty. In their charmingly snarky way, the gofugyourself girls can take something meaningless (Sienna Miller's leggings, Kirsten's Dunst's boobs) and make it meaningful.

How? I don't really know. It just part of the magic.
