Iman hoping black models will be more than "caricatures" in the industry

It's the year 2008 -- haven't we moved beyond skin color? Why is race still an issue in the modeling industry? We want to know, and so does Iman.

Heidi Klum vs Iman: Catwalk catfight?

Though it could have been the start of a feud between Heidi Klum, host of the U.S.'s version of Project Runway and Iman, host of Canada's version, it appears that will not be the case.

Iman was recently quoted as saying that she has much more high fashion experience than Klum. Claws out, right? Well, when Heidi was asked about it at the launch of her line of jeans for Jordache at Bloomingdales, she responded by saying Iman was right. Huh? Is that the kind of behavior we expect from a supermodel?

Models' race still an issue

Filed under: Style in the News

You know, it's 2008. You wouldn't think I'd still be writing about this sort of thing, but unfortunately a model's race is still a big issue. This season of runway shows is coming to a close and the tallies are out -- most designers put no more than 0-2 African American or Asian models on the runway.

Jezebel has the full count but at the Ann Demeulemeester show her models were 100% Caucasian, John Paul Galliano had 52 models and of those he had one African American and one Asian. The winner of the season for most diverse casting was none other than Vivienne Westwood. Her totals came in at 2 Asian, 5 African American and 1 Latina out of 25 girls.

Vivienne is definitely one of my all time fave designers and seeing that her show was kinda sorta diverse just gives me another reason to love her. But, that really doesn't excuse the fact that even though she had more shades of the skin tone rainbow on her runway than anyone else, 8 girls out of 25 is still barely over 30%!

Tyra Banks, Iman, and Naomi Campbell have been some of the most wildly successful models of this day and age. Models don't have to be Caucasian in order to be a household name. C'mon designers, get with the times. We live in a Benetton world!

Iman honored

Filed under: Runway Trends, Style in the News, Celebrities with Style, Style for a Cause

While Naomi Campbell is consistently disgraced by her less than model behavior, Iman is being honored for her impressive dedication and contributions to the "I Am African" campaign.

The supermodel was recently honored for her work as world ambassador for "Keep a Child Alive", a program which combats AIDS in Africa. Capitol File Magazine presented Iman with the humanitarian award on November 30, alongside ambassadors from South Africa, Zambia, Lesotho, Equatorial Guinea, Angola, and Congo.

Iman also recently co-hosted the
Condé Nast-sponsored Black Ball, held in order to benefit the "Keep a Child Alive" foundation. The leggy beauty's dedication to charity stands in stark contrast to many of our supermodels and celebrities in the news today: Iman is genuinely invested in a cause, instead of being invested in the media coverage she might receive by lending her status to a charity.
