Damien Hirst x Warhol Factory x Levi's

warhol damien hirst party los angelesLast night I partied like the Warhol muse that I think I am at Fred Segal in Santa Monica. The event celebrated Fred Segal's new pop-up store, which exclusively carries the collection by Damien Hirst in collaboration with the Warhol Factory and Levi's.

The scene was not your typical fashion-event-going crowd; it was very (very) hipster -- lots of grungy boys and girls wearing hoodies, sneakers and jeans (which of course was fitting considering the collection was based on those pieces). DJ's were spinning, drinks were being mixed, and photographers were snapping away -- Warhol would have been proud.

The collection itself was pretty darn cool too! Amazing skull bedazzled jeans, skull printed short-shorts, tee shirts, and one of my favorite pieces were the shiny leather jackets. In fact, I liked the jacket so much that I got one of the hipsters to model it for me.

Check out the store at Fred Segal in Santa Monica on Broadway and 4th Street (420 Broadway).

Damien Hirst designs for Levi's

Damien Hirst's design for Levi's If you're not into modern art, you're probably thinking, "Damien who?"

Here's a quick rundown: Damien Hirst is a pretentious post-modern artist/oddball who cuts apart cows, puts the pieces in aquariums, and sticks 'em in a gallery. He's more-recently famous for creating a diamond-covered cast of a human skull priced at $99 million.

So what would a guy like this do with a pair of Levi's?

While you might expect something gruesome, gothic, or totally lame "avant garde," the artist's creation is actually fairly straightforward and, in my humble, non-artistic opinion, a pretty obvious choice. Hirst takes a normal pair of black denim jeans, and grafted them with little crystal skulls.

Um...great.

There's more to come at New York Fashion Week, but if this is any indication, I wouldn't hold your breath.

Gold skulls: bad taste or good conversation piece

Most fashion designers got the memo about the lameness of skulls, but apparently word didn't reach British artist Damien Hirst. Earlier this month, Hirst unveiled a diamond-crusted platinum skull at Whitecube, his London Gallery.

Dubbed "For the Love of God," the unconventional bust boasts a whopping 8,601 diamonds, so it's no wonder that the market price for the piece tops out at somewhere near $100 million dollars. According to Hirst, the glitzy skull, which cost $23 million to produce, explores "the fundamental themes of human existence - life, death, truth, love, immortality and art itself."

Uh, sure. Nothing cuts to the core of man's existential anxiety like $23 million worth of diamonds. I can't believe I'm saying this, but next to this over-priced, under-meaningful piece of crap, the Chapman Brothers' plastic blow-up dolls look almost museum-worthy.
