John Varvatos makes watertight rubberized Chucks

Filed under: Accessories, Style in the News, Clothing, Shoes

If you've ever owned a pair of Converse Chuck Taylors, you probably noticed that they look awesome. You might have also noticed that they tend to allow water to enter freely through those little eyelets and commence to turn you shoes into a sloppy soaked mess. When John Varvatos set out to rethink Converse's classic shoes, he had at least one idea that might actually be an improvement on the original: waterproof uppers.

These rubberized Chucks not only have the advantage of keeping those summer downpours from rotting your feet off, but the rubber creates a cool semi-gloss effect. Varvatos also took the liberty of going with black leather laces and completely blacking out all features except the toe and sole. They look just a bit more stylish, yet the don't loose the old school appeal. We say: way to not screw up a classic design. Now, if he could only do something about their tendency to get stinky.

CBGB's is now a John Varvatos menswear boutique

Filed under: Style in the News, Men, Celebrities with Style

On Monday, CBGB's died one last time and was reborn as a pricey John Varvatos menswear boutique.

Hmmm. I'm thinking $130 tshirts are totally not punk. On the other hand, Varvatos has pretty good rock and roll connections, and 315 Bowery had to get bought by someone, right?

Converse clothing line teams up with Target

Filed under: Style in the News, Clothing, Jeans

I was totally excited to see the words "Converse" and "One Star" in the same sentence, but alas, the Chuck Taylor endorsed clothing brand is not announcing a comeback of its classic One Star sneakers. Instead, the headline was announcing something almost -- but not quite -- as cool as that. Coming this February, Converse is releasing its new "One Star" clothing line exclusively at Target.

The "One Star" lineup is going to offer athletic and vintage inspired designs for both men and women. It looks like it will mostly consist of classic pieces with subtle trendy updates -- like Chucks with a more contemporary stitch pattern. The line will include graphic tees, polos, vintage-inspired denim, lightweight knitwear, and few dresses.

Honestly, this seem like a pretty great match-up. Target's price-range seems like a good fit for a clothing line that's famous for bringing casual athletic style to street clothes. I recently got a gift card from Nordstrom and used it to by some Chucks -- let me tell ya, felt kinda strange.

Like most Target lines, "One Star" is going to have that muted, half edgy, half submissive, wear it on casual Fridays look to it. Really, what else would you expect?

Remember When: fat shoelaces

Filed under: Accessories, Clothing, Shoes, Vintage and Retro

Some things were just meant to be together:
  • June Carter and Johnny Cash
  • Champagne and strawberries
  • Popping and locking
...and Chuck Taylors and fat laces.

Back in the day, this was how all the cool kids rolled. I had a pair of white Chucks with some neon green laces that were at least an inch wide. And yes, my lacing style could be conservatively called "double helix."

I make no apologies. It was what you had to do.

What happened to them? In general, I think the fat shoelace/Chuck Taylor thing went the way of Cyndi Lauper. As for my own Chuck Taylor/shoelace combo, the white hi-tops turned a dingy shade of grey pretty quickly, but the laces are still holding strong.
