Handicraft week in Tunis

Filed under: Style in the News

Fashion weeks are still going on around the world. Even though all the major cities are over, the rest of the globe continues to celebrate style in their own unique ways.

Tunis is one place where they have their own twist on Fashion Week. Rather than Fashion Week, they do Handicraft Week. While it's not as major of a production as say, Milan Fashion Week, Tunis designers still get to watch their creations head on down the runway .

Trend alert: George Bush prints

Filed under: Style in the News

If you live in Tanzania, chances are that you're seeing tons of George Bush's face. Not just on the news, but on people's clothing. From halters to handbags, Africans are sporting W's face like it's a designer logo.

What's up with that? I immediately thought: these people must be getting paid. And I was right, sort of. Apparently, people in Africa do love the guy for sending tons of cash their way. But, it's actually aid money that's going toward fighting diseases -- especially AIDS.

I doubt you'll see anyone wearing these where you live -- since he hasn't been all that popular elsewhere. At least he's doing something that most Americans can get behind.

Fab earrings for a clear conscience

Jewelry is beautiful, don't get me wrong, but not everything associated with your precious jewels is quite so lustrous.

Green with glamour, an earth-friendly website that sells everything from housewares to clothes to a wide range of price-points has a fantastic assortment of distinctive jewelry.

My favorite piece has to be the hand-carved cruelty-free bone earrings from Kenya. Paired with a casual dress or a bare tank top, these earth-friendly baubles are a great way to get out of the gold and silver rut. What I also like is that they look expensive, but aren't -- the exotic danglers actually go for a very modest $27.

If you're in the market for an unusual Mother's Day gift, I would highly recommend springing for these earrings. They aren't for every mom -- but they're definitely for mine.

Bono to edit Vanity Fair?

Filed under: Style in the News, Celebrities with Style, Style for a Cause

The latest move in Bono's global campaign to help to Africa isn't quite what you'd expect from a rocker. Instead of throwing awesome concerts or schilling red merchandise, Bono will be the guest editor of Vanity Fair's July issue.

VF's editor Graydon Carter told the New York Times: "Bono will make a different issue about Africa than we would. I think there isn't one editor in the world who would not pay attention if Bono pulled up and said he wanted to edit a magazine." I'm sure he's right on both accounts, and no doubt the issue will be worth checking out.

Of course, the only thing better than a Bono-edited Vanity Fair would be a Bono-edited US Weekly -- and that I would definitely buy.

Bridge to Africa, fun finds for a good cause

Filed under: Handbags, Accessories, Style for a Cause

This cute little purse is made of one continuous zipper. The little number is not only a neat idea, it also supports a good cause. The purses are made by Xhosa Women living near the Drakensberg Mountains in South Africa. The proceeds from the sales of the purses, which sell for just $10, help these women provide for their families. The purses are just one item on the Bridge to Africa website which also has colorful baskets made from telephone wire, beaded jewelry and other small gifts.
