Rolling Razor: Shaving (r)evolved

We shave. You shave. We all shave for, um, the acceptance of society? We're not sure why we're forced to shave, but we know it itches if we don't. Plus we look a bit like Lon Chaney, Jr., if we ignore it too long. It's the hair gene (that's science) and it's our curse. Damn dirty apes.

Until recently there weren't a lot of options in razors. There were straight, stem, disposable, electric and laser cat. Some choices have proven more popular than others.

Enter the two-headed dragon. The Rolling Razor slips on and off fingers easier than a wedding ring in Vegas. So we've heard.

Scentsational: Neutrogena Comforting Butter Body Wash

We hate the bother of applying moisturizer after the shower. It's messy, cold, and time consuming, the three horsemen of "Next time."

Our skin is saved by the one million moisturizing body washes with magic ingredients ranging from shea butter to glitter oil. They'll never take the place of real moisturizers, but sure do buy some time before your elbows get red and cracked.

Neutrogena Comforting Butter Body Wash is our current favorite, although for non-moisturizer related reasons. Oh, it's got shea butter, and mango and cocoa butter, so it makes you plenty soft. But we'd use it if it gave us green scales just to get a whiff of the addictive, faintly tropical, vanilla scent.

Seriously, go down to the drugstore and smell it. You will be powerless to resist the comfort of this body wash!

Dove's campaign for "Real Beauty" was Photoshopped

Remember when we were all in love with Dove because they ran an ad campaign featuring "real" women? Well, kind of real -- clearly they weren't going to use fat or unattractive people, but at least the women in the ads were of more normal stature, and not Photoshopped to completely unrealistic proportions.

Or were they?

Dentaburst, when brushing your teeth is just too hard.

Hmmm. Put this in my mouth you say? We got sent these free samples from Dentaburst. What? A tooth-brushing alternative? I gave the mint flavor a whirl and recorded the experience with my handy MacBook Photo Booth.

Keep 'em dark with Caldrea

Oh, the fear that accompanies washing those perfectly inky black jeans.

Will this be the time they start to get a little dusty looking? Are those awful white chalk lines going to appear? Maybe I can get away with wearing them out one more night without washing them...

Organic soap that doesn't smell like a salad

Savon de Marseilles Organic Bar Soap: Verbena
Organic beauty products are great, I would even go as far as saying they are fabulous. However, sometimes you get a dud and your soap ends up smelling like a salad. I don't know about you but I don't want to smell salad when I am showering. So when I tried this soap by Savon de Marseilles and it smelled good. I was over the moon.

This little bar of magic is free of animal fats and all that nasty stuff. In place of that nasty stuff are vegetables, organic palm and coconut oils. Savon de Marseilles soap is also loaded with lavender, which sooths your tired nerves or if you need a jolt try the verbena-scented soap, which will give you a little invigoration.

The packaging is great too. It has nice and contemporary feel, that way no one will be forced to call you a granola-crunching hippie.

Foot lube. For her pleasure

In case you've been in a coma and missed the five million "Strappy Sandal Roundup!" articles in the March issue of everything, it's toe time again.

And while you'll see tons of advice about pedicures, the glaring omission in all of these shopping guides is the very important -- medically necessary, if you ask me -- precaution: Foot lube.

Indie Designer Interviews: Anita Grant Natural Hair & Skin Care

I'm a big fan of all of the amazing independent designers out there. In an effort to get inside the mind of the indie designer and find out just what makes all of these creative types tick, I present to you an ongoing segment I call Indie Designer Interviews.

Tell me a little about your company.
On December 5th, 2005 AnitaGrant.com was created, by the all round self-proclaimed cosmetic-label-reader-ingredient junkie-mixtress, Anita. At anitagrant.com we believe in cultural focus by purchasing directly from farming communities and/or partnerships with fair trade suppliers throughout the world, helping to maintain economic independence & cultural survival. Using a variety of plant-based ingredients from different countries around the globe; we are celebrating ecological & cultural diversity.

How did you get started running your business? It wasn't until I blistered my hands using a store bought bottle of so called "safe synthetics" that I decided not to purchase another off the shelf hair care product again. Since 2005, I've been making my own brand of natural and organic skin care and hair care. You shouldn't need a degree in bio-chemistry to understand the ingredient list of a hair care or skin care product label. It was a bit difficult at first to decipher all the Latin (INCI) nomenclature of the ingredients and separate the "bozwellox" from true benefits but I got there in the end. It's so liberating to be able to read the label of a product, understand the ingredients contained within and say "NATURALLY, I can do better."

What are your top fashion & beauty must-haves? If I were trapped on a desert island it better be one with a Coconut tree and fresh Coconuts hanging from it. I would cut it open and eat the fresh white meat, rub a bit of the Coconut water on my hands and moisturize my skin and curly Afro hair with it - loads of uses.

The new Burt's Bees natural beauty campaign: How natural is it?

Words like natural and organic sure get tossed around a lot in the beauty industry. According to The Organic Beauty Expert, Burt's Bees might want to back off on the natural terminology, which could be tough since their new campaign is Natural Versus.

Burt's Bees recently teamed with Mike Indursky, who did wonders with L'Oreal in terms of boosting sales. However, the target market for Burt's Bees is a little different than that for L'Oreal -- they care more about how their products are made than which celebrity swears by them. And the hardcore natural beauty girls are a bit more educated about what should be in their products -- they're not just going to take a fancy schmancy ad at face value.

Indie Designer Interviews: Disquieting Designs

disquieting designs massage oil candlesI'm a big fan of all of the amazing independent designers out there. In an effort to get inside the mind of the indie designer and find out just what makes all of these creative types tick, I present to you an ongoing segment I call Indie Designer Interviews.

Today's interview is with Megan, who creates a line of handmade, natural bath and body goods with a rockstar edge. Her company is called Disquieting Designs, and her philosophy is that if you can't pronounce the ingredient, then it shouldn't be on your body. All of her natural body products are certified cruelty-free by PETA, and Megan is also a proud member of the Pittsburgh Craft Mafia.

How did you get started running your own business? I actually started out in jewelry. (Turns out I wasn't too good at it.) I just didn't have a passion for it at all and I knew that I couldn't compete with the level of talent that's already out there...I turned to bath & body because of how much fun I could have playing with scents. It's become an obsession ever since!

Who are your favorite designers? I seriously love Cleo Dee's, My Favorite Mirror, Oh Melisa!, and Dying Breed Designs. I really appreciate people that are not doing something mainstream...they've taken an idea and turned it into something that suits their style, instead of trying to appease the market. And I think that's why they're successful.

The Iron Fairies

Last night, I was down in New York's East Village and I stopped into a store on St. Mark's Place called The Iron Fairies.

From the outside, I could see there were soaps, candles, and a big rusty bathtub inside, as well as lots of little cast iron fairies. Fun!

As I walked in, the first thing I noticed was the smell. The scent of sandalwood hung in the air like a thick mist. Sandalwood, as it turns out, is one of the specialties at The Iron Fairies. Oh, and by the way? With a wink, they claim that it's mined in the Australian Outback by fairies.

On duty at the counter was adorable fairy aficionado Caroline. She welcomed me and said "Do you want some fairy dust?"

Do I ever!

Clinically proven to smell like Will Ferrell

The good people at Old Spice have struck advertising gold by bringing Will Ferrell onto the scene. In the guise of his latest character Jackie Moon, from the upcoming film Semi-Pro, Ferrell has created a handful (armpitful?) of short commercials hawking the new Old Spice Pro-Strength deodorant/ anti-perspirant/ skin conditioner, which is apparently proven, clinically mind you, to provide protection from odor and wetness. Yes, it makes me want to whistle, too.

I haven't tried the deodorant/ anti-perspirant/ skin conditioner, but I am slightly intrigued. I'm not a heavy sweater, not since I gave up exercise, but I've been known to shed a few drops of "sweat-gland deuce," (seriously, watch the videos) and I'm always looking for ways to avoid smelling like a turtle cage.

Apparently the product is to be applied at night during which time the pores are plugged for 24 hours, even after showering. While I applaud the brilliant use of "the best defense is a good offense" mentality (wait, did I get that backwards?), I'm a bit concerned about the idea of plugging my pores to block anything, even sweat. Where does it go? Will my armpits become bloated with sweat-retention? I don't know. I'm not a scientist.

Why don't you ask Jackie Moon?

Do 'The Wave'

Neutrogena Wave
After seeing this magical face cleansing gadget right here on StyleDash and in every store from Target to Bed Bath and Beyond -- I had to pick one up.

For a cool $11.99 at Target I got "The Wave", 7 cleansing pads, a 14-day supply of refills as a bonus, and they even threw in a battery -- A very small price to pay for 21 days of face cleansing fun.

Neutragena boasts that The Wave, by using gentle vibrations, helps clean your skin 10 times deeper than normal cleansing. This deep cleansing tool will remove more dirt, more oil, and more makeup than your puny little hands could ever accomplish.

I have to say, they are right! I love this product. It is simple to use, there is no mess and it really gets my skin clean. I have been using The Wave for two weeks now and I can really see a major difference in my skins appearance. I am breakout free (finally) and my skin is smooth and radiant.

If you want to try out The Wave you better act fast because they are selling out everywhere. I went to Target to stock up on refills yesterday and the display looked like a tornado blew through it!

Looking good while offending

Let's say you're a fashionable Christian and you want to look your very best. Would you be inclined to support a line of cosmetics called "Lookin' Good for Jesus," or would you, like the people of Singapore, be offended? I suppose it's a matter of personal opinion, but Roman Catholics in Singapore complained that the items were offensive and they were subsequently pulled from stores.

Produced by Blue Q the line promises to "Redeem your reputation and more." Products include a "virtuous vanilla" lip balm and "Get Tight with Christ" hand and body cream.

According to The Straits Times (via MSNBC):

"These products trivialize Jesus Christ and Christianity," it quoted Nick Chui, 27, one of the complainants, as saying. "There are also sexual innuendos in the messages and the way Jesus is portrayed in these products."

On the packaging of one of the products, Jesus, wearing a bright white robe, looks heavenward while a blond, heavily made-up woman with an arm draped across his shoulder gazes dreamily at his face.

"Why would anyone use religious figures to promote vanity products? It's very disrespectful and distasteful," the report quoted 24-year-old accountant Grace Ong, also Catholic, as saying.

Judging by the fact that Blue Q has other lines called "Dirty Girl," "Cat Butt," "Mullet," and "Balls," I think it's fairly clear what their intentions were when creating the products. Offensive sells.

They do make this though, which I've actually purchased as a gag gift. So, there's that.
