The new ParentDish: helping raise kids of all ages

Gwen Stefani, style inspiration

Recently our sister site Stylelist did a beauty evolution slideshow of Gwen Stefani. She had a lot of kooky looks, that Gwen. Blue hair, bindis, and that red, red lipstick. Something about that story stayed on our minds, and we finally figured it out.

Gwen owned every single look, no matter how off the wall or potentially unflattering. True, some worked better than others, but she always seemed comfortable with herself and really excited about her style. And because of that she looked terrific all the time.

We could all benefit by taking a page out of Gwen's book, and just go for it once in a while.

Try out some false eyelashes or green nailpolish, put on a pair of bright Chuck Taylors with a sun dress, or (okay, yes, this is a personal one...) wear something besides all black the next time you hit the town.

Want to try some glittery eyeshadow or eyeliner? You can! If you don't like it, sweep it away in an instant with make-up remover pads. How about bright red lips like Gwen? Those make-up remover pads work on lipstick, too.

You should put pink streaks in your hair, if that seems like fun to you. It's called the magic of clip in hair extensions. Surprise your date with a commitment-free blond up-do with spray on/wash out color, or a full on wig.

Whatever you try, remember to throw your shoulders back, hold you head high, and if someone titters, ask yourself, "What would Gwen do?"

The answer, in case you're unsure, is to smile really BIG for the camera and remember that fashion is fun! You'll look great and be glad you had the confidence to try something fresh. We promise.
