Tommy Hilfiger launches online TV channel

Fashion and music have gone hand and hand since as far back as we can remember.

Dame Vivienne Westwood helped usher in the punk style that is still very popular in the UK by dressing the Sex Pistols and Adam Ant; Jean Paul Gaultier outfitted Madonna in those now infamous cone-shaped bras for her world tours, and as of late, Gucci's Frida Giannini has been taped to design 20 different looks for Lenny Kravitz's upcoming 'Love Revolution' European tour.

So, it makes perfect sense that American designer Tommy Hilfiger would be interested in launching an online channel devoted solely to the music that probably inspires his clothing collections.

Plus, singers have been making the move to fashion in hoards, so it's about time a major designer gave them a taste of their own medicine!

In an effort to recapture younger customers, Tommy TV will offer exclusive concerts, called The Hilfiger Sessions, featuring stars such as Wyclef Jean and Beyoncé -- whom the designer has outfitted in the past. Jean will appear at the first Hilfiger concert in London next month.

While the channel will not directly sell logo buttoned-down shirts and tanks, the brand hopes to make an "emotional engagement" with its viewers who will in turn stop shopping at Abercrombie & Fitch -- the company who has taken some of Tommy's sales.

When we were in elementary school, we were rocking Tommy everything (socks, jeans, belts). So, we'd love to see Mr. Hilfiger make a comeback in '08.

On the new venture, Tommy tells the London Times: "I wanted to dress like Mick Jagger, Pete Townshend or Jimmy Page but where I grew up it was impossible to find those outfits. That's why I started designing clothing inspired by these musicians. The best artists have changed their music and image to keep on top. It's important to know how to constantly reinvent yourself."
