Natalie Portman's vegan shoes are almost here
Some of you may have already heard that Natalie Portman's new line of shoes is going to come out on January 15th. All her designs are animal-friendly, meaning they are cruelty-free and are produced in humane conditions. Even though I'm not quite as tenacious as Ms. Portman, I greatly admire the fact that she's put forth the effort to make this difference.Elle.com has new pictures of the shoes and details on where to purchase. Each pair will set you back about $200. No one said it was cheap to be cruelty-free, unfortunately. Style-wise, I sort of feel like all of the shoes look a bit dated. I mean, they don't look necessarily out-of-fashion, but the preview pictures remind me of something I could have seen at a Nine West in 1998. I do rather like the shiny Mary Jane heels, though.
Psst... Honestly, I think most of the drive to buy is caused by the Natalie Portman name.

Um, big chunky straps, shapeless boots, shiny prom shoes; these shoes are hardly something anyone would wear. Her heart's in the right place, but she should have had someone professionally design them. Additionally, the description of them gave me the impression that it's simply a humane working enviroment, and there wasn't anything animal in the shoes. Doesn't really sound like she's doing much of anything but not have them made by three year olds in a third world country.

Aside from way too expensive shoes, Natalie rocks...........Psychology major at Harvard, great acting skills (w/ the exception of her wishy washy attitude that made her look stupid in Episode III) She is beautiful and talented. I hope she goes on forever!

I remember I was 'sposed to tell the Nun "Horses" made me write "Fuck You." on a love note to this fat girl in the first grade. Anyway I said the entire neighborhood, my family and French people...That was a discussion I had while riding on a Nuns lap in the "Office". Oh yeah, Fatty... The answers "FUCK YOU!" Even better from a stirrup. The truth and justice algorithm. Small Arms?

It's a big rip off, it's not as if shoes are tested on animals or anything, how can they be produced under"humane conditions?" people are making them, not animals!

these shoes are not attractive whatsoever. They are nothing special at all except that they're what? made out of tree. and whats even more ridiculous is that they're charging us the same prices as every other shoe brand. i wanna save the environment not buy it

Hello people, most shoes like these are made out of leather. Leather is cruel to animals because it just happens to use the hide of a cow, which would mean the cows would have to be killed. Natalie is a big time vegetarian, so of course she wouldn't want leather shoes. I believe all the money made on these shoes are going to some animal conservation organization. So she is not making money from this.
And these shoes seem to be in her classic style, so even if they don't seem to be what you would wear, it is what she would wear.
Also, leather is processed with chemicals so harsh that anyone who works in a leather facility will probably end up with some radiation related illness, like cancer. Not to say that all leather is made this way, but I would say about 95-99% of leather products these days are created in this fashion.
Wow people, wake up and take responsibility for your world like Natalie Portman is obviously trying to do. Or at least educate yourself before you start critiquing her.

Why pay more when you can pay less.
In the summer I enjoy wearing sandals made from cloth, or hemp, imported from bolivia, ecuador or peru, these are animal friendly.
For all the other seasons, I wear very comfortable boots and shoes that are man made material.
They look like leather, but they are not. I look chic, without paying over US$50.00!

I've been vegan now for almost 2 years and I agree with someone who mentioned that one can buy "vegan" pleather shoes anywhere, "cheap"; from Target to Walmart, Payless, etc. I appreciate NataliePortman's stand on veganism and animal rights but I;'m not spending $200 on a pair of shoes that I can get for under $30.00. Sorry, Natalie. Thanks though. I am glad you are out there spreading the vegan word! To everyone else: go vegan: spare an animal, eat a vegetable; dumpdairy.com. Recipes on line by the thousands and lotsof cookbooks available for ideas. It is easy from Tofutti, soy, beans, grains, nuts, soy, fruits/vegetables. Your body/animals will thank you! I love to cook, vegan style. Gigi, veganfitness@AIM.com. Eat healthy, drink water, exercise!
